I started making music because of some weird instinct or drive. I think it's an extension of my mating call to women. It only works at shows though. I tend not to brag about to girls that I meet in other places. Seems cheesy to me.

"So, why do you make music?"
One word for you... minge!
Seriously though, Iv been a lover of music my whole life. As soon as i could blag a guitar out of my parents I was a happy swanter. When I first had the opportunity to record music in the comfort of my own home, I knew that this was for me. Since then Iv been able to think about little else (ok maybe a few things break into my consiousness from time to time
).
I guess that isnt a reason, but I think it probably explains what drives me a little. I dont make music so much for fun (although i do enjoy it immensely), I do it because i feel its my purpose in life... my 'thing'. And its the thought of getting better and developing that motivates me to spend such a huge amount of my time working on music. Be it studying music on paper, reading and researching, practicing my instrument (
), recording and designing new sounds to work with, developing my production and mixing... this is definately a full time job for me! Luckily my interest in music is pretty diverse, so I dont tend to get bored - when one things gets tedious I move onto something else. For example, I might do nothing but practice site reading for a couple of weaks, then I might move on to hip hop mixing techniques, then onto designing wacky ambiences and textures, then a drum record'athon, and so on.
I only wish i had the money to be able to make many of my ideas reality. Right now Im working on a shoe string, so i have to cut many corners! Luckily i a reasonably well kitted out studio - at least I have pretty much everything i 'need' to hand. But when finance permits, I can quite easily see myself being one of those f**ked up country recluse types, you know like Pete Green

Take your pick:
1) That's not music, it's wheezing from asthma.
2) If I don't, the bad tunes will build up and I will explode in a fountain of confetti and paper streamers.
3) I heat up, cool down. If something gets in my way, I go 'round it. Don't let life get me down; gonna leave this world the way that I found it. I got the music in me, I got the music in me, I got the music in meeeeee. I got the music, pretty music, I got the music in meeeeee.
4) As Zaphod Beeblebrox said when Arthur Dent asked why the Magratheans all died out: "Something to do, I suppose."

Nothing to me is more compelling than music. Playing it listening and mostly actually creating something satisfying that you can say of "I made that". Zappa said "Music is the best"
I met Steve Swallow one night in Philadelphia after a gig he did with Carla Bley in 1988, where he said he does music because he has to. There really is no choice in the matter. It has to come out somewhere somehow.
Best,
Gordon

My grandmother is suffering from congestive kidney arrhythmia: I needed to save my poor Gram! So I make and sell my music on the streetcorner... Sometimes it rains and the cardboard bottoms of my shoes get soggy. Then I feel sad. But then I think about how the money I'm making from selling my music is keeping my Gram alive and keeping a roof over our heads, and I feel happy again.
P.S. - This means that if you download my songs off Kazaa YOU ARE KILLING MY GRANDMOTHER
