Uhm, i guess it just goes down to personal taste. In my opinion they're both very good software apps with their pros and cons. Personally i can do the stuff i do in fruity five times faster than the other apps. Slicing loops and resequencing them, sampling drum machine work, it's faster and easier than my korg electribe or the akai mpc, mind you, don't flame me, i didnt say 'better' than a mpc, just faster. That's really something.

Bones may be right when he says that orion synths are better but for complex samplework and programming i find fruity the most confortable to work with.

But i still think it all comes down to how you're used to make music and what are you going to need from it, demo versions are the best thing after all

Hey man.

Bad points (imo):

- Playlist:- Where FL Studio doesn't let you see everything in MIDI preview, it does allow you to stack many different patterns for the same instruments repeatedly. This is _extremely_ powerful. In ORION you'll have to just load another generator.

- Multi-timbral support:- FL Studio makes multi-timbral support so easy and so enjoyable. In Orion, you have to use different channels INSIDE the piano roll. You can't have seperate tracks (except for output). It is mind-bogglingly hard to keep track of.

In Orion for VSTi/DXis you can extend more tracks for one generator in Playlist, thus you're able to stack more than one pattern for one generator to be played at the same time; I suppose this equals Fruity. I use this for multitimbral instruments.

Using Midiout and Receive Midi From should help for the latter one at some extent too. But even as Orion use I agree it could be better when using multitimbral instruments. None of the internal generators are multitimbral, this is also one reason why the multitimbrality hasn't got that much "care". And I suppose the multitimbrality is more of also Cubase's fault it exists in software synth - Cubase has limited slots for VSTs.

another cool thing I forgot to mention is that FLS has onion-skinning with the piano roll. By that I mean you can see other patterns that you've made in the background while you are making a new pattern. Makes it easier to see harmonic or melodic contours in your other parts (or to quickly see where important beats are in your drum pattern, etc).

Ableton Live 4

IMO Live4 is the easiest host by far. I can get more done in it more quickly than anything else.

now, i have totally disregarded live 4 cause i hear so many bad things about stability and whatnot...

could be just rumours tho.

then again, im not planning on ever playing "live" from my laptop or anything, im not a d.j. or something, so again, it prolly wouldnt be my workflow.

I just use it like a traditional DAW, but with a really cool 'scratchpad' to organize and launch snippets of ideas. It being sold as a DJ tool I think gives lots of people the wrong idea about just what it does. You can do things on the fly, but you can also use it in a a linear way. It works very well IMO.
