A higher fidelity stream would be most appreciated here is all I can say... Even 64->96kbits mp3 is a huge leap in listenability for me... Or perhaps you could consider streaming in Ogg, which seems to sound great at 64kbps these days.

Do artists feel obliged to stick with one radio station – or would they like to reach the biggest audience possible with more than one radio station, each with a concentrated speciality and listener base, free and fast? Out of interest

Depends... I think you might have trouble getting sufficient material for some of the more esoteric musical pigeonholes from KVR/Audioshots alone... There's probably just about enough jaath about to warrant a KVR dinner music station though

Why restricted it to websites - it’s a radio station called EMC Radio the net is way bigger than a few websites – content does not just come from two sites but many.
Content is not, and will not be a problem (once the ball gets fully running imo
I think also striving to have times for certain content to be a good idea - some of this content might be better on other stations, and they themselves might have content that will be better on EMC etc
I think it particular getting the music as far outside of K-v-R and AudioShots should be the target – ie, get the artist – Out There, not in the same sites, kind of defeats the idea of radio broadcasting, if only two sites are going to listen to the stations

Ahhhh OK... I was just thinking it's really cool to have a "local" station finally, hearing all the names we know and love from the forums, that's all
But yeah, if you want to make a specialist 'lounge' station, then feel free to play Air and Zero 7 alongside my tracks... Just make sure they come *after* mine, to minimize unfavourable comparisons
And yeah, it would be great to get our tracks 'out there'... I personally hate 'marketing' myself so if someone else can take the reigns they're more than welcome

Ok, Techbot and me are in talks. More to follow...
The reason for my previous, kinda-pissed-tone posting was that there really is very little sense in discussing things further here, since Techbot has things going on already and I'll mainly be supporting his vision and efforts on those parts I can...
As nice as suggestions etc. would be, it's just... don't know how to put it really
If you recall the older thread, it was really far fetched with all the committees and totally bonkers ideas - the comments about needing written assurances about technical support on a totally free, volunteer based project... where's that smiley...

And this has already been divided on two websites, which kind of shoots itself in the foot - but we'll see what we (that's Techbot and me plus my trusted techies) come up with - a single website providing all the necessary stuff - playlist listings, schedules, links to artists, possible management tools for DJs etc. yadda yadda - would be better than how it's currently done, but again, it'll be Techbot's decision.
In any case, keep your fingers crossed
With the bandwidth available on the current server, we're talking quality streams, more than just mp3 as a format... ain't technology wonderful?
Regards,
JMH

Griels For what it's worth, I'm there with you - what I originally visioned (is that even proper english
) in the older thread was just that - make KVR content easier for KVRians to listen to, with programming that makes it REALLY easy to find stuff like monthly competitions and so on... a win/win situation really, as peoples' own servers wouldn't take as much traffic, and everything would be reachable from one dedicated location.
A freebie marketing channel for KVR? Or other sites?! No thank you, that's something I don't want to be a part of
Aiming to join all the gazillions of other web radios, what would be the point exactly... escapes me totally =)

Hmm... I wouldn't mind both approaches... Maybe something ala Peoplesound playlists where signed artists are mixed in with newer ones... But then, it's already being done.. A KVR/Audioshots specific station is much more unique and as such will attract listeners the other approach would not.
But then, as Techbot says, it's up to those who volunteer their resources to decide how such stations are run. Any station that features KVR/Audioshots artists is a good thing in my book

I've started posting messages outside of the forums websphere, to bring in a wider listener base. I will contact Music Tech, Computer Music, Future Music and Wire Magazine over the next few days.griels wrote: And yeah, it would be great to get our tracks 'out there'... I've already posted to 365live.com
I will also add another repeat show this evening at 8:00-10:00 GMT. Specially for Glooper.
I am interested in doing a Jaath-Ambient Special twice a week. So future submissions might specify
[Hangout]ie: Free for All or [Jambient]: Noodling boll**
I was going to produce,(not present- this was to be done by a friend of mine) a punk hour. But punk is not what it used to be and getting permission from the labels was proving more difficult than it would have been fifteen years ago.
As for better bitrates, one way or another it WILL happen. It's just a case of when.
However It's the content issues not the technical ones that take up most my focus. Technology will constantly change (anyone up for streaming video, I'll have some streaming content in a week or two) but the style and content of the shows is where it's at.
Another thing I'm thinking of is a button
like the "Made while listening to winamp" that contributers could put on their MP3 page something like "Hear me/us on EMCRadio"
As for being connected with several forums, this is essential in my view. I can easily jump between the sites because of the support of Spe3d and PHz.
This project while independant is based on a symbiotic relationship, that would be compromised if a new seperate site was instigated, IMO.
In fact if anyone knows of other forums were a thread (not a complete forum mind you just a thread pointing back to the EMC Radio Forum) would be suitable please go ahead and start one. And let me know.
Either way, a majority of the contributions will most likely come from these forums and the shows will be tailored as such. But it would be nice to get content from other sources. There are plenty of stations out there, but none that I can find that is broadcasting material directly submitted by the copyright holders. I am sure there is a large segment of the "Freeform" radio station listeners that would be interested in this unique approach.
Anything hear can be discussed in greater detail, ie a sticky per topic at the Audiotorium. I don't want to start all the topics but once started I will respond regurarly.
Yours etc

Yes, we do. The primary reason why I personally didn't feel like discussing things over and over with you in here - I don't mean this in a negative way per se, just that I see no value in you and me talking about to each other about every possible comment I've made.Spe3D wrote:Cool, we differ big time in our ideas of how to get music 'out there'jmh wrote:

Let me try to explain... I was under the impression that this is continuation to the original idea in the old thread. Hence I got confused about seeing things torn to several directions. However, things are getting clearer now.
Now it seems to be just what the opposite, a web radio station getting content from KVR and other possible forums, aiming for the casual listener just like every other station out there.
While not an impossible task, it requires a totally different approach. Different even to what's carried out right now.
Apparently it isn't what the original thing was about... so, instead of making people assume the best, I have to be blunt about it and prepare people for the worst; unless the discussion we're going to have with Rob heads to another direction and convinces me otherwise, I'm quite likely not participating...
It's just not something I got initially interested in, instead it seems to be the very thing discussed originally as "pointless"...
Spe3d Weren't even you against 'yet another web radio' in the old thread?
See, that's what I don't understand. For me it's already enough to see things spread on two sites...Techbot wrote:This project while independant is based on a symbiotic relationship, that would be compromised if a new seperate site was instigated, IMO.
I seriously can not see another way to provide the information to the listener than having it in one central location. Discussions and content provision aside, of course.
I also don't see how it would really break up or compromise the symbiotic relationship - other than of course the other sites losing visitors and thus attention, if all the information relating to the radio's content was in one central location. Quite the opposite - discussions etc. can be carried out on any possible forum that you see 'fit' for providing the content, but announcements about schedules, programs etc. would ideally be behind a single bookmark, making it easier for the listeners.
But I'm assuming that's already happening on another forum - I haven't checked it out.

JMH

The ‘Other’ thread covered adequately my points and what I think – I am not going to re-type it all here for you, please re-read the ‘other’ thread and stick to that thread for possible ‘differences of ideas’jmh wrote:

Rob has my support and clearly I am not against his philosophies or project, you will also notice he has the support of the K-v-R user base.
My suggestion to you is to support his and EMC Radios philosophies in what ever way you can - personally I think reading the last post by Rob shows he also has the right idea about getting awarness to the radio etc.

I think jmh is over analyzing things, if your not interested, don't participate, nobody really cares,
somebody is helping out and doing something they enjoy, fun is the number 1 priority..
I'm personally getting tired of satellite radio, me and my crew have switched to internet radio, the biggest problem is sound quality, I found the ones with poor sound don't last too long.
when it comes to web radio stations, the more the better, choice is what counts,
check the amount of stations on soundclick these days,,this thing has really taken off,
the real good ones will become famous, just because theres so much interest,
make it a cool show, with a hip dj, good quality sound and songs, and make it unique somehow, genre spotlights and stuff,
exciting times for blokes with a song to share...
