Sorry, but phase reset is not a substitute for a freerunning oscillator with a subosc.

The hard sync thing i'm testing again. Maybe i do something wrong in the past....

Ahh you want to have the osc freerunning, I overlooked that. Sorry!

I don't have Cypher, but as far as I know the modulation system is pretty flexible. So, maybe you could try modulating the phase of the main osc and the "sub" osc with a random value. If you use the same random value for both oscs, it should basically sound like you want, even though it's not really "freerunning".

Or just use the method Angus suggests, which is way easier and should do the trick too.

Thanks you for the file, meanwhile i did also my own testings.

I was a little bit irritated, because when i turned hard sync off, the waveforms are still in sync. You have to use the detune knob for one of the oscillators to unsync first. And yes, it seems hard sync is a good substitute for sub oscillator/audio divider. Thank you for helping.

Cypher2 can do some lush analogue sounds, however, I often forget how deep it can go into the uncharted territory. Here's one example. The following sound is made with two FM filters. So, oscillator 3 and its pitch is the source for FM in both filters, running in parallel, each filter on the verge of self-oscillation. Filter 1 in BPF mode, Filter 2 in LPF mode.

All the subsequent movement is controlled via pressure and slide (CC74) on the Seaboard RISE 25. Only three notes are played at any given moment. Watch out for the glassy harmonics later in the track:

But then, I often veer towards pure tones like the one below.
It starts simple enough, but in places, later in the track, it turns into a timbre very reminiscent of a soprano sax. The bright 'sparks' you hear in places are created with the LIFT dimension on the Seaboard (49, in this case). This is very slow, and ambient, but it also shows the PRESS and SLIDE dimensions well. Warning: lots, and lots of reverb! :D

Very nice, especially the second one. Are you ging to release a soundset for Cypher 2 or share these in some way?

Genuinely gobsmacked by that first one, @himalaya.

One of the joys of working on a synth of this kind is the complexity that emerges from simple rules at each layer: the sound designers create things that the synth designer might never have imagined, and in turn musicians create things with those sounds beyond what the sound designer anticipated.

TransMod and the Seaboard are force multipliers at both those levels.

Incidentally, Cypher2-watchers, there's a 2.4.10.3 update out now.

Summary of issues fixed:

Oh, and there's a minor Strobe2 update on the way too (probably a couple more weeks) with a lot of the Cypher2 UI/UX goodies.. little TransMod enhancements, nicer tooltips etc.. (but still 16 TransMods, 5 spline curves, the simpler arp/sequencer and no Maths modules.. don't get too excited 8) )

All my Cypher2 patches go straight into the factory set (check it out, there is a lot of content from me) or will be included in future official sound sets, these two presets included.

Just a note that I posted these two demos not as an ad for any sound sets, but simply to share what I find amazing about Cypher2. I sincerely get totally surprised by some of the timbres Cypher2 can produce. Some are so startling...Cypher2 and Bazille, these two can be pushed to such extremes.

My only worry is that, especially with 5D presets, people may miss a lot of deep, intricate sounds, only because these presets require a little more focus and time to fully explore and understand. With normal 2D presets people are used to zooming through a list of presets, taking a second or two to decide if the preset is usable to them or not, but this will not work with 5D sounds. These 5D presets need careful assessment. A few minutes of playing time, at least. Often, the intended timbre in a 5D preset comes out when we interact with pressure and slide...so if one skips through a long list of patches one by one, a lot of good stuff will be missed...

By the way, one of the Cypher2 updates brought a whole new set of synth brass presets, for those who love these type of sounds....check it out below. I love that comment in the Soundcloud file:

"Sounds like someones dad is playing"
haha! 8)

I think synth brass patches are for every synth playing dad, aren't they. Although these demos were played by a very young musician! :D (not me, I'm old :phones: )

oh get a room already :).

I have 'known' (although we have never met) Himalaya for I think almost 9 years....and I swear every synth conversation during that time, regardless of what synth the convo started on ends up with him romancing Cypher :)

Ah, this is a patch I that made last night. It's not available (yet). But I think I might stick it in one of the themed expansion sound sets (on the horizon)...
Or maybe I'll just keep it for myself :D :harp:

Cool man. I'd actually prefer a tutorial. I don't buy sound sets. I'll get there eventually, but I'm screaming for more Cypher2 tuts/vids.
