Indeed. I love all types of music, but I grew up in the 70s and for me popular music is blues-based music. My comment was meant exactly as Sepheritoh said. This is the only place I've found not dominated by electronic music and the diversity of genres here show how far digital instruments and recording have come. This was the first overtly blues piece I've heard here. How about a blues month?

Nick
sorry, I am afraid I misunderstood your review
I like several types of music as well ... :)

windchillFactor - I like the mood you are setting, but imo there is too much going on. The vocals are way too low in the mix for me to understand anything you are saying. Interesting tune.
Thanks. I'm always going to lean to the side of adding a large number of instruments, sounds and noises which has made it difficult for me to mix in vocals properly, especially when I record them at a whisper as such. But I keep trying...

EQ. You can get what you want with the magic of EQ. You want too remove frequencies that are already present in the other material. With your voice, you might have to duck out a lot of the bottom end but you can also use EQ on each track of your music mix to carve out regions for each sound to occupy. I don't think your vocals are too quiet - I think they just get overwhelmed by the massive build in the midrange-bottom frequencies.

First of all, thanks to shamann, softegg, ScarKord, Tancos, Ixox, Sleek Month, bluedad, plunge and pHz for their votes last month!  I'm such a lame bastard, I never properly thanked them!

And on to this month... thanks to wilkoryte and DrApostropheX! (Wow, not only a #2 vote but it's directly above four of my idols here at KvR! :-o Surely that's a mistake... I should be at #6 and everyone else bumped up accordingly... :P )

Also, my thanks to Bagungie, baggio, Guitarjeff and sttjelle for your votes!....
Well Koorby, I'm not at all surprised to see you get some number ones and a few H.M's in this month's comp.

I am convinced that there is significant promise in your abilities.

In your entry, you obviously came from the perspective of 'the big picture' alright and I was thinking that as your discernment for the use of interwoven tones and textures which support a well defined harmonic structure develops, I'm sure we'll see your realized abilities shine like a beacon!

If that's the case, (which I believe can easily happen), you'd better strap yourself in!

Kind words Bags, thank you. I certainly feel that I have "potential" :) Let's put things in perspective here .. I have not touched a MIDI keyboard in anger for oh, 13 years? Yep, it was in 1991 that I packed up my studio and I only got back into about 13 weeks ago. So I guess I have some catching up on technique and finding new melodies.

As far as "space" in songs is concerned, I could learn a lot from Vurt's entry - excellent use of silence in his song - superb stuff!
:D :D :D

Xander,

Thanks for the vote - I can rest easy now knowing I have got at least one vote. In the company of the excellent submissions this month, I am truly honoured.

I dunno, I liked it - it had a kind of irreverence but was also structurally cool too. Anyway, when I said it "tickled" I meant that I felt like I was being teased, which is cool. 8)

I have to at least be a little bit moved - or teased or slapped or kicked in the arse - by a piece of music in some way, or I just lose interest - no matter what the genre. 8)

:-o

Windchillfactor, you must have lost your sanity 8)

I love the blues, she heard me cry.

And I love George Duke, too!

I am constantly amazed at the range of musical interest here. I wouldn't even blink if someone submitted blues, country, classical, or gamelan.

So don't sweat it. Just make music and we'll listen.

Oooh I have a few votes - thanks for that Shane, Xander & Mr Monkey sir :)

btw - first time I've been given a vote for "production" - but then again first time I've actually used any form of mastering on a track :) ("Flatblaster" which seems pretty good and was easy for me to understand)

A Gamelan themed month would be great. Maybe it could be broadened to include other world music styles though (it WAS WOMAD this weekend so it could be a WOMAD theme).
