I think it's a great way to start getting into music/recording. But I think that when someone wants to go outside of Reason's "box" (say by wanting a particular VST), I agree that ReWire is a horrible experience...
It forces someone (who may be a novice) to think about TWO sequencers, TWO saved-files, ensuring things are launched/shutdown in the right order, etc.
This is a CRUD experience in my opinion, and instead the FL model works SO much better... If I started-out as an FL-user, but then realized that I needed another DAW too, hosting FL as a VST just *works* for the most-part. This is a great experience for those that are migrating between two solutions.
But Reason clearly doesn't want people to Migrate to another solution. Good business, but bad end-user experience.

when Reason didn't have record for years, the people who needed record functionality left.
the people who stayed said they didn't need record. now those same group call recording audio "revolutionary". this is pure comedy. A timestretch algorithm is nice but doesn't change that is merely a Reason update that should have been included in Reason YEARS ago. But hey, if you love it, who am I to rain on your parade. Have fun with your toy people

Bear in mind that you could use Soundflower on OSX (there must be a PC alternative!) to route audio signals into Record... thus... if your VST has a standalone option, you can launch that, and record directly into Record; just set the tempo to the same as record, and then slice off the latency that there will be... if you can zoom in that far of course
Just an idea....

That requires a separate purchase of Reason... So by itself it has a Rompler. And a good library?headquest wrote:A new rompler. Plus all the Reason instruments are automatically there if it is installed on the computer (without opening Reason up).pdxindy wrote:

Hardly true. I mean, why INVENT Rewire if you don't want people to use other stuff... why not be like Digidesign and lock your product to a soundcard so that no-one else can join the party?idobs wrote:

Yeah I've already suggested people could use ReRoute (from Reaper) or another virtual audio cable option (of course on my Creamware system I can do that natively anyway)Amberience wrote:Bear in mind that you could use Soundflower on OSX (there must be a PC alternative!) to route audio signals into Record... thus... if your VST has a standalone option, you can launch that, and record directly into Record; just set the tempo to the same as record, and then slice off the latency that there will be... if you can zoom in that far of course

Who is saying it is revolutionary? I don't see anyone here saying that, nor do I see it in Props marketing. All of the marketing speaks of just an easy to use software, it makes no claims of being revolutionary. However, I do agree that it should have been done years ago. If they did, Reason would be in a much better position than it is today.zion7 wrote:when Reason didn't have record for years, the people who needed record functionality left.

On the toy comment...in the hands of a good producer or band, I'm quite sure Reason and Record will be able to produce songs that sound just as good as with any other software. What exactly makes it a toy?

Neither.Ubiety wrote:So is that pronounced record or record?
It's "räkörd", and only natives of Hälsingland, Sweden can pronounce it correctly.

Actually I *think* I might be able to use my Profire control panel to do the same thing, by using the software returns. Will have to investigate.aMUSEd wrote:Yeah I've already suggested people could use ReRoute (from Reaper) or another virtual audio cable option (of course on my Creamware system I can do that natively anyway)Amberience wrote:Bear in mind that you could use Soundflower on OSX (there must be a PC alternative!) to route audio signals into Record... thus... if your VST has a standalone option, you can launch that, and record directly into Record; just set the tempo to the same as record, and then slice off the latency that there will be... if you can zoom in that far of course

All you had to do on a PC is use something like Hammer form PeterTools Software and a multi I/O audio card. It was simple and and very effective with the use of Multi Mapped MIDI controlls via Ableton Live and Reason/HammerBear in mind that you could use Soundflower on OSX (there must be a PC alternative!) to route audio signals into Record... thus... if your VST has a standalone option, you can launch that, and record directly into Record; just set the tempo to the same as record, and then slice off the latency that there will be... if you can zoom in that far of course

I like toys. Just saying.Pete C wrote: On the toy comment...in the hands of a good producer or band, I'm quite sure Reason and Record will be able to produce songs that sound just as good as with any other software. What exactly makes it a toy?
Musicians use the word to desribe cool equipment all the time - I buy a new keyboard and say to my mates, "hey, look at my new toy".
I think that when people describe any musical equipment as a toy, they maybe don't understand musicians. YMMV though

sorry, I call all music software/gear "toys". Plus, thats how the gf views themPete C wrote: On the toy comment...in the hands of a good producer or band, I'm quite sure Reason and Record will be able to produce songs that sound just as good as with any other software. What exactly makes it a toy?
PS: You can make high quality music in Reason, I agree. But it takes a lot more work and usually the same project will sound better in Logic or Cubase. But yes its possible to make good music with Reason.
