I'm with wopelka with a genre specific contest. That way it will allow different people to shine each time... As some people will be better at say Drum and Bass than others. And for those that have never tried to write a tune in the said genre, they're be learning lots of new techniques, etc...

Free-for-alls don't encourage people to try new stuff.

My fav themes of the past have been... the Sci-Fi Theme, the metel theme and the "use samples of non instruments" theme... All of these forced me to try new things... :)

Is that a serious question? GPO = Garritan Personal Orchestra, for which 1300 people got into the group buy last week... (sorry, I didn't understand that it was a question, and I didn't know a funny enough other explanation of the GPO acronym to respond earlier :))
aahh

I didn't know...:P... and don't have it either... I have EWSQLALWORO(?) instead...

This whole thread has Grossly Political Overtones... But maybe if Gary Possibly Offered GPO (Great Program Obviously) to us all with a Generic Payment Option, Good Patrons Overwhelmingly would buy it for the contest...

Though Wopelka also intended it to allow for non-genre interpretations of "drum and bass". ;)

I would love to agree... but I don't have a clue about drum and bass... or any of the dance/trance/R&B/hiphop genres... would EQ +12DB below 100Hz be enough to turn a song into D&B?

Post

just bump up the bpm and add some distortion on the bass ;)

The trouble with doing genres is the hyper-schismization (how's that for word smithing :hihi: )that's occured within the past decade, making it hard for anyone to agree just what of a thousand categories, with all their sub categories, a song fits into.

for that matter, I'm not really sure I know what drums and bass is, or if I've ever heard it :?

Not sure but i think it helps if the kick and the snare are totally desynchronized from the rest.

M'Snah - If you are unfamiliar with the genre in question then as part of the months tune research you would have to familiarise yourself with it too..:)... A good way to broaden your musical tastes too and remove those prejudices that we all have..;)

1-2-Many, of course genre's can be quite wide in what they encompass... And I for one don't like to catogorize music too much... However the theme is supposed to be a start point... I imagine people will still do their own version of drum 'n bass and let the public decide whether it fits the theme, at the same time they might learn some new techniques on how to get the fat bass or big drum sound...

Having said all this... the genre "drum 'n bass" wouldn't be a genre I'd want to do much...:D ... Of course I'd give it a go!

I propose, for the sake of avoiding another "Free for All" or one in sheep's clothing, we flood Phz with some ideas for future contests. Here are some of mine:

1. Play your Organ - compose a song which is driven primarily by organ sounds - maybe even an obligitory organ solo.

2. Wicked Solo - compose a song with a killer solo as it's main attraction.

3. Animal sounds - compose a song using animal sounds, either as fx or instrumentally - mangling allowed.

4. Three Quarters. Or other less popular time sigs. Maybe even a contest titled Polka Parade!

5. Disco Fever - nuff said?

6. Funk-a-Delik. I've always wanted to try composing something funky - wicka whack guitar n all 8)

7. Happy Minor - compose a song that sounds happy using a minor key - Not easy, but possible.

8. Beat Machine - song must use a drum machine for beat ala Microtonic (there are many free beatmachines avail). All programmed beats, no manually entered notes, or live drum playing/note entry. Machine/sythetic sounds preferrable.

9. Backwards Song - re-compose an entry or song you've done before backwards. Extra points for how close it comes to the original when reversed again. No reversing of original wavs allowed.

10. Mimic your favorite Artist - compose a song to sound like a popular artist. If you're really good you wouldn't even have to say who it is.

I don't have prejudices. There's just a lot of music that I've never heard and don't like because of some irrational associations.

Other suggestions:
- Sonata
- Blues
- A Christmas song
- Acapella interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody
- A true counterpoint song with pads instead of voices
- Atonal modern jazz
- A pseudo-national hymn in Swedish
- A palindrome song (symmetrical from start to finish, except for delays/reverbs)
