No offline bounce. Annoying in case you just want to quickly take a bunch of different mixes with you.christianmusicmaker wrote:Massive flaws? No freeze. It's amazing how you can get used to that in case you're running heavy projects.
No PDC. No way to use things such as SIR on busses.
Actually, all those don't annoy me all that much, I'm just used to it. And of course, even if it was there, I wouldn't have to freeze as often as in SX.
But then, the audio editor is really lousy. The same goes for timestretching of audio files (which, of course, is related). Quality is lousy and it's not available straight in your arrange.
Also, no MIDI plugins are supported. They can be quite fun. And no, as much as I love (and know) the environment, it's no replacement at all, especially when working with virtual instruments.
No MIDI inout/output plugin support. Can be partially compensated by using Energy XT and a virtual MIDI driver, but it still sucks.
Bad plugin compatibility. Lots of note hangers and the likes, especially on sample based plugins (such as Kontakt 2). Again, it can be compensated with eXT, but it's annoying that eXT will allways eat up all your keyboard controls.
No OMF support. It's supposed to be there, but it simply doesn't work in 5.5.1 (it even doesn't in 6.x, at least not properly). I would use that VERY often as I'm transferring projects between Logic and Cubase regularly. Fortunately it's at least working from SX to Logic.
f**ked up reclocking. Nothing for everybody, important for me, as I'm often working with "unclicked" band recordings that I'd like to work with in a proper bar/beat based manner.
I'm sure there's more, this was top of my head.
But then, I still prefer it over anything else.

I know I do, Theo. Just not yet. No money for a G5.

I remember 2 test for Cubase, the Thonex and the Five Towers.
You may run it on your mac if you want on SX, and i believe you´re going to tone down just a tiny little bit, when comparing it with a lot of single CPU PC, not even X2 or Dual cores.
it´s not by chance that macs are going to be fueled by Intel.
Meanwhile, these days i think a Pentium M is quite up to the task, without the noise and the back pain... just had cool convertes and a good channel strip.
About host... well they are hosts, they suposed to do the same: Noise... i like mine better than yours, it doesn´t make me think you´re not clever or a nice person, just different than i.

Thanks Sacha. I was really curious as you seem very content with Logic 5.5 judging by your comparisons in other host threads, so I wondered why you would still be using it. Thanks for your explanation.Sascha Franck: I'm sure there's more, this was top of my head.

Cash was certainly the showstopper for me regarding Logic 7. I could get an upgrade to Logic express for £69 from Logic Audio 5 which I have, but the applecare additional cost rules it out completely. There are also equally capable if not better hosts than 7.1 now anyway IMHO.
Also freezing, bouncing and bus usage will get round the need for a ttoz level machine

ttoz...
A dual 2.7 G5 Mac is indeed a great machine. The Logic quicktime movie over at apple.com was brilliant. Especially the feature on sculpture (I don't know if it has any equivalent) but the overall cost is just not worth it compared to other options right now for me.
I hope it all goes well for you

I'm glad you're having fun. You were always having performance problems in the past. I hope you have no such problems in the future.
