i'm thouroughly hooked on pattern editing, i've found the multichannel Drum Machine (sampler) to be !! - and someone suggested you can use soundfonts in it??? BUKU SKETCHY!!! I'm so freakin impressed... and are y'all serious it's being developed by 1 guy, with a dude on gui, and one on beta testing, and it's this freakin good??? once again, buku sketchy!!! i'll buy it with pleasure, as soon as my fed. taxes come in... and i take out my life insurance. THANKS EVERYONE, there's really something special happening here on kvr... it's like were all brother and sister the way we argue and yet always agree!!!

7 in May??? Damn I was thinking around Xmas, and wishing you didn't even mention it's in the worx, otherwise this post would turn into questions about 7.

Anyway,
Regarding multitimbral, since I use Kontakt and Reaktor a lot, it's much better than having to load multiple instances. That's major hassle workflow issues. Kontakt being the best, you can control how many mono/stereo outs you want. Doesn't really matter how many though since I load them through XT.
Nice for piddling with 5.1 work too.

Orion is the best for sequencing as well as it also being mixer-centric.

GeForce is an nVidia chipset and its for gaming. I had no idea Matrox did that. Over here you can only get Matrox cards with Matrox chips.

Yeah but it includes a dodgy hack of OpenGL so I don't expect it to be very good.

LOL actually, you're right, it's not Matrox, it's inVidia. Don't know why I thought it was Matrox. Maybe there's a matrox card in one of my other boxes or something.

Post

If you have one, try it. I'll bet it does a better job.

... for those stupid enough to want to replace one synth with another without bothering to check whether or not the new one actually sounds better than the old. I am staggered that anyone could see merit in a feature like that.
Many times I've written a tune, only for it to outgrow itself. What once might have been the perfect lead sound no longer fits so that's why I for one might want to change synths. The only way to see if a particular synth will have the sound you're looking for is to try it. There are any number of presets, generally, which could be the sound I'm looking for. Or I can breed the genetics or tweak the controls until I'm blue in the face. If I can't find the sound with that synth, I'll try another and another and another until I find the right sound.
Nothing 'stupid' about it. I am staggered that anyone could fail to see merit in a feature like that.

Rich is hugely resistant to this and I have to say that I don't see the imperative either, beyond the fact that everyone whinges about it. There is already a display of the current bar and the time is only a CTRL+I away, in big, bold numerals that you can read from across the room. If I was doing music for TV commercials I might want it to be there all the time but I only really use it when I've finsihed an arrangement and I want to see how long it is. Its purely for curiosity. Unlike George Gershwin's father, I don't judge the worth of a piece by its length. In fact I think that clock-watching can lead to poor arrangements because you will tend to add or remove bars based on time rather than on merit.
Again, because you fail to see the merit, doesn't mean to say there isn't one.
For instance - I might stream a tune, master it in Audition and then spot an unwanted glitch at 2mins37secs so I go into Orion, bring up the playlist, bring up the time display, click on the playlist in approximately the area that I think the glitch might be, bring up the time display again because the act of clicking on the playlist has hidden it... no, not there... click further on in the playlist, bring up the time display again...
or, scenario 2: I've posted the tune in the cafe and someone says, "I'm not keen on that sound at 4.53." Same scenario. Not having the time display displaying makes no sense to me.
or, scenario 3: I'm writing a tune for the KvR competition - it has a time limit on the total duration. Again, not having a time display that at least has the option of always being on top just makes no sense imo.
There are any number of reasons why it would make sense to have the time display always on show in the traction bar. How many other hosts don't display time? There's room for it in the bar, I don't see the problem.
Also, if people like you aren't happy with it, then you could always request a show/hide button couldn't you? Then people like me could tell you what an idiot you are for requesting something that might make your workflow more suited to your methods. Either that or you could disguise the time display by cutting a out a piece of cardboard and sellotaping it to your screen if you object to having to see it so much. :P

However, this is not the first time we've clashed because I've expressed a preference in the way Orion does things or expressed a feature request.
You seem to class yourself as Orions unofficial representative (
BONES wrote:Clearly you're unable to give any reason why Rich should take time away from useful features to put in something that he sees no value in so how could expect him to change his mind. Maybe if I told him that you would really like it, that would be enough?
), but your attitude would do Rich no favours if you were.

BONES wrote:Version 7 is also in the wind and, whilst we don't have a beta yet, it seems that many of the little things that everyone has been complaining about or asking for over the years are finally being worked on. Rich is really excited about it and for the first time ever he has someone helping him. He's also got Coramel, maker of the Azura skin, tweaking up a new default skin. The bits I've seen of it look pretty cool so I think v7 is going to be a huge step forward in terms of Rich listening to his customers more than doing his own thing. That's probably a good thing for most of you but possibly of little interest to me, although I'll probably change my mind when I see what's been done.
Again my eyes are opened. "...a huge step forward in terms of Rich listening to his customers more than doing his own thing."
IMO, Rich should listen to his customers more. How many developers put a product out, charge money for it and then tell their customers that "I don't want it there, I don't care what you want."
bones, you don't pay for Orion, I do. I've paid good money for it and will (probably) continue to do so when the paid upgrades come out. So, really, as a paying customer, I think my (and other customers) wants and feature-requests outweigh those of a freeloader, know what I mean?

I don't actually care that that's the way he is. I just don't think there's any need for it.

I dont being a beta tester means he is a freeloader, and im pretty sure he actually bought his copies/updates (even tho did get free versions)

Back in 2001 when i first bought Orion pro, I posted on Orion users yahoo site that i thought the manual could do to be abit more informative. Bones verbaly riped my balls off ':o'
for sugesting such a thing. But over time I'v found that at more than half of what he says makes good sense.....I tend to think of bones as a bulldog thats great with the kids, well house trained but will still keep biting the postman!':-o'
! Orion Plat is the one to buy!'::'
Right!, now back to lurking again for the next 5 years :D

Post

Well, the manual is still missing some info, but most ppl dont tend to read it anyway, myself included.

Post

To be honest I don't read it any more either
