Thinking of selling my UAD and my Powercore PCI, am i crazy?

Sound quality - no difference. Plugin quality, well that's really subjective - I would say different, but then two DSP cards will give you "different" sounding plugins.

If I'm shooting for a harmonically rich, slightly fuzzy analog-sound, I can certainly achieve that no problem without the UAD.

The only plug I don't have a substitue for is the Plate reverb. That was very special, but it won't be long before someone codes one for native.

Hey Dave -

As you know, I did the same thing at around the same time. Marquis with the Voxengo eq's or PLParEQ replaced them just fine.

As far as the plate verb, have you tried the CSR?? Man, the plate on it sounds as good or better. imho. And it's easier to dial in the right sounds all the time.

If people are trading their uad-1's for the equivalent in hardware (i often run between 15-30 plugins in a session) i can see why theres rolling blackouts.

And of course, only people in certain types of houses can do it too...I think I'd have to get my wooden floors reinforced if I were to get those several EMT plates needed.

Good points! I also remember my repair costs to maintain hardware, there was always a button breaking or a cord getting a shortage and needing replaced or something.My repair costs where higher with an all hardware studio then now with a mostly software studio. As for Uad's i use mines with native plugs because i like the best of both worlds, and because i use both there's no problem when my dsp card is maxed out with plugins launched for i have native back-ups, and vice versa. But i agree with many the cards should be more powerful, and i do have occassional problems with the dsp card.

so you can and should use alcohol to clean out your pci card contacts? Didnt know that one. My pc is almost 5 years old, never a component failure, i try and keep it in the best shape possible. This is a handy tip

Well, I am not sure you should apply moonshine on it , but there is alcohol-based (metanol most likely) compounds out there suited for cleaning of PCBs and contact-surfaces. Alcohol destroys fat etc. and vapourizes in air, so what remains is a clean surface.

I bet now that AMD and Intel have gotten over the 4 GIG problem we will see HUGE cpu speed jumps in the next couple of years.

The 4 gig problem is not a CPU issue. Windows 2000 supported up to 64 gigs of memory by putting in the /pae (Physical Address Extension) switch in the boot.ini. It moved the OS from 32 bit memory addressing to 36 bit addressing. I have multiple boxes at work running 12 and 16 gigs of RAM for SQL on 32 bit Windows 2000/2003 without problems.
