I second that, Zaphod. I love my TG77, FM7 is no match for it. FM8 sounds even worse in my opinion, envelopes are slower than the ones of the FM7 to my ears...

The FM7/8 envelopes are fast enough to make AM with them, so I guess that's not the problem. Anyway, when it comes to the DX-Envelope there are things even the FS1R isn't able to emulate correcty and Yamaha should know how their synths work, for instance times get clinched on lower velocity level, so a proper emulation seems to be at least not an easy task...
A formant is a preferred resonating frequency of any acoustical system.

I remember reading about FM7 and how it was such a good emulation(identical)of the original long before i bought itliving sounds wrote:I second that, Zaphod. I love my TG77, FM7 is no match for it. FM8 sounds even worse in my opinion, envelopes are slower than the ones of the FM7 to my ears...

what's your point?mkdr wrote: Oh yes... supercomputers are very fun to play with. They'r so cheap an all and readily available to every musician.
no, the purpose of the thread seems to be a circle jerk for folk who think synths are magiclly better when they're in a 19" rack case. But c'mon, this is not the purpose of this thread. It's not about history, or the future, but the present time!

Ok, let's explain slowlywhyterabbyt wrote:

[sequencer] -> [midi] -> [engine] -> [synthesizer d/a converters and sometimes even analog filters, waldorf q]
is different from
[sequencer] -> [engine] -> [daw converters]
^ find the differences
AND
[sequencer] -> [midi] -> [analog/hybrid engine] -> [analog outputs or old d/a converters]
is A LOT DIFFERENT FROM
[sequencer] -> [engine modelled in software using the same ROMS if possible and a lot of simplifications] -> [daw converters]
A lot of us are speaking about the second case. It's not magic, it's different.
Now let's do an other game:
you have a good song of 80s or 90s that you love a lot.
Now BUILD your emulation = a cover that simulates the same drum, bass, call a new singer for it and use all the new technology for doing it (pay attention, here you need an emulation, not a remix)
Now listen. Do you prefer the original or the emulation? I think in the 99.999% of the cases the original will be better, and the new one will be similar to a karaoke. Every time someone tries to emulate something, results are not so good. Don't be afraid, it's a limit of our brian.

maybe you're thinking you're in another thread. you might want to check the poll, which uses the words 'better' and 'worse', not the word 'different'.Zaphod (giancarlo) wrote: A lot of us are speaking about the second case. It's not magic, it's different.
remember that car advert with that hendrix track? it wasn't hendrix, it was an 'emulation'. Its done all the time for the advertising industry. and plenty of people find it good enough to not be able to tell the difference. but dont be afraid; its a limitation of your brain that you think what you experience is representative of everyone else. Now let's do an other game:

this is offensive : "limitation of your brian".
Believe what you want,
ps: reading again, I can't find anything offensive in what I wrote. I proposed an example, and it was not even directed to you, it was a general example. There is NO REASON for that replay.

its your phrase.Zaphod (giancarlo) wrote:this is offensive : "limitation of your brian".
reading again, I can't find anything offensive in what I wrote either. especially since it pretty much reuses what you said.ps: reading again, I can't find anything offensive in what I wrote.
why is it okay when you say it but offensive to you when i use it to make a different point?

the word "our" is rather different from the word "your". In my statement I was speaking about something common to the human being. Not ever addressed to you, to what you said. In your statement you are using the word "your", that I read addressed to mewhyterabbyt wrote:its your phrase.Zaphod (giancarlo) wrote:this is offensive : "limitation of your brian".

I doubt most people on this forum have ever used (or owned) a hardware synth.
Software synths are good... but they aren't as good as hardware synths.
I think the gap is getting a lot, lot closer... but still.
I mean if software is so good... Why are there so many developers obsessed with making fuckin' clones of old analog synths?
Anyway. There's lots of people here that can post all their technical bullshit about hardware being software in a box and whatever...
But then you read any pro-audio magazine (and CM doesn't count, it's a f**king joke) it's filled with amazing musicians showing off their racks of synths.
Whose opinion is any sane person going to trust?
Whatever.

I trusted CM is well when i was a noob.Well the SOS reviews seem to be the benchmark and if they say 'this is a great emuation you kinda trust what they say and use this information as part of your decision to buy the softsynth(see my post above)

Yes and if you read Cm that does'nt count in your view you will also see that there are many professionals who have racks of hardware and is only use software nowhoffy wrote:I doubt most people on this forum have ever used (or owned) a hardware synth.

Nonsense. Absolute and complete bollocks. I doubt there's a person on this thread who hasn't owned or played a hardware synth. The overwhelming majority will have at least one.hoffy wrote:I doubt most people on this forum have ever used (or owned) a hardware synth.

Here's my list (and this is just what I still have)...
Kawai K1
Kawai K5000s
Akai VX90
Sequential Pro-One
The Pro-One's nice. The K5000s is wonderful. I wouldn't piss on the other two if they were on fire.
Any other "technical bullshitters" in this thread want to tell this idiot what synths they own?
