Yes Zyn really takes time to master but there are plenty of great presets and if you use external effects that you know well, you could still hammer something out in time?
Try the latest Zyn version (make sure you set the buffer in settings to match your audio card) and another host like Minihost or Reaper to see how it works there in order to pinpoint if it's something in Ableton that causes the trouble or if it is in your hardware.

As it's not really made for VST it has quirks and issues, but buffer size is important to set properly. As example, I have my audio card currently set to 6 milliseconds latency which is a buffer size of 256, etc etc.
Then TLS limiters always gets raves and probably the best in the freeware world? Also underrated Xhip has one, and some like LoudMax.
Haven't tried that one, but do check if you still have the free JB Barricade on your disk, that's a good one but as all his stuff is now payware and therefore it's no longer easily available as per OSC rules, it can't be used when rendering for submission here but brilliant for safety when working.glokraw wrote:A variety of free limiter and related plugins to try here:

OK, I'm in
Title is:
Into The Gates Of Arram Koth
Track is 6 minutes long
It was produced on a dual core Athlon running debian linux optimised for audio.
All patches are my own and their order of first appearance is:
Far Space Voice
Ultra Bass
Another Choir
Silver Bell
Prophesy
Full Strings
Wet Brass
Whistle
Tunnel Piano + Slow Deep Matrix
Multi Synth
Great Organ
Bright Rushes + Breathy Ahh
Smooth
I used Rosegarden as my sequencer and a dumb keyboard for entry.
All tracks were played live, no compression, quantisation or automation but some track copying.
Unfortunately I see that sound cloud does its own compression which kills the dynamics especially at the end

It wasn't me! (well, actually, it probably was) - apparently no longer an 'elderly', now a 'senior'! Is that promotion?

Nicely done.
Just remember to name the file, mp3 tag and SoundCloud title like this: Artist - Name of Song (Artist - Name of Song.mp3), so everyone knows who it is. Just do that and upload again. (not exactly sure how to tag mp3's in Linux, but for sure there is a way)
And yes, SoundCloud will resample everything to 128kbs for the site player, so do that yourself if you want it done properly, but of course the downloadable file is whatever you uploaded and I think the one most will listen to when voting so you decide what is best..

Hi V'ger, sorry for not mentioning this earlier, the buffer size was different indeed and since i've reset it in Zyn, surprise.. no more crashes.. i will have to download one of the hosts you mentioned, to check if the system responds better. Thanks again.

Oh crap - the new track has come out as being a 'private one' and I don't know how to change this (or how to remove the other one).

Good news Aib007, hope it stays that way.
Folderol: If you already uploaded the new one to your account, just go to the dropbox and choose the "Select an already uploaded file" option (text link under "choose file" button), to share.
To remove the old one, go in your SC menu to 'Groups', choose the KVR OSC group, and click the black X top right of your track to remove.
Seems you already fixed it, but to change your track's status from private to public, go to your track (You > Tracks), and click the little pencil icon to edit properties and set it in the page that comes up.

"Restore A Planet To Life"
Mike777
Entry uploaded. Inspiring synth! Only crashed once when I turned a dial too fast. Almost gave up yesterday because I could not get my midi tracks to play the notes in perfect time. Maybe because I don't have a dual core. Notes were not playing on time. So I had to use Sonar's Audio-Snap function (not an fx). I did not try to load multiple instances, I recorded one track at a time, changed patch, etc.
Host - Sonar 8.5
ZynAddSubFX - 12 instances (recorded one at a time)
FX - just the synth

I know I may be quite late, and I'm very sorry for those who experienced loud spikes...
but I did some investigations regarding the noise bursts! See if setting the oscil size and buffers correctly (as for the latest version help!)

To moderator, fyi, I made some improvements to my entry, so I erased my mp3 and uploaded a new one.

Cheers Mike, songs can be modified until vote start at which point the dropbox will be locked.
Jackoo: I just tried to have the oscil value the same as buffer (256), but then Zyn refused to load, going back to double value (512), everything is fine. A 1024 setting makes no difference as far as I can tell. What is this setting anyway?

I'm new to KVR but excited about getting involved with this challenge! I've been using Zyn on my own for a few years now but not got round to setting down a proper track. This feels like a great time to do it! (I've not actually met people who use Zyn before but I love it) Hopefully will have it completed by the 1st!
