A question from me:
I can turn on both the [x2] and [/2] buttons at once - and get normal rate of rover motion; should they be exclusive?
It works Ok at the moment - having both buttons one means that they cancel each other out, so we can have double / normal / half time right now. Changing it to make them exclusive could be confused by host automation of two parameters. Making it a single three-way switch would mean more work for tonecarver.
What are your thoughts? Leave it as it is?

Bumpage for new version.
Version 0.4 is available HERE and has the following updates:
+ Repeat probability
+ Configuration file (location of scales folder, midi map file, octave display)
+ Support for non-SSE2 32-bit CPUs
+ misc bugfixes and gui tweaks
If you have had problems with the 32-bit version on older CPUs please try the new version and see if it works for you now.
Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback!
Have fun.

Confirmed to work now on an Athlon XP / 1.8GHz sans SSE2, which would refuse tu run earlier versions. CPU load even on this methusalem is so low that multiple instances of nova with slim synths seem workable.ToneCarver wrote:If you have had problems with the 32-bit version on older

Great stuff. I still use it daily.
Now, most of the stuff in this thread is over my head, so sorry if this has been addressed already. Is there a way to save the root pitch value when saving a pattern?

Sorry, no. The only things saved with a pattern are the matrix size and the positions of the rovers and obstacles.cosmosis wrote:Is there a way to save the root pitch value when saving a pattern?

I'm in! This looks like a whole load of fun! I'll try at least to make one demo track from me. No promises granted though.

Looking good here.
A couple of ocmments:
(a) when I click on the Scale arrow it takes me to the folder containing the "scales" folder not into the "scale" folder itself. I've tried several variations of the scalefoldername in the .ini file.
(b) the left and right Climb sliders scale markers have some bright markers and a mix of single and double thickness.
(c) Can the Delete and Load pattern buttons be changed? I've found that I am often clicking the second button to load a pattern. I think it is partially because the Load button is not similar to the Save button. Perhaps, as shown for the second pattern slot?

Uploaded with ImageShack.us -- hence the frog green tint?
(d) what scale is the 00-default.txt. Would it be more useful if the default were the Western Major scale?

Downloaded and tried out the new version for a few minutes last night, and had a couple questions and comments. First, as always, thanks so much for a very sophisticated free sequencing tool, ToneCarver.
I don't have the interface in front of me right now, but what is the difference between the rovers in white and the ones in black? Are they the same, except that one set is moves twice as fast? That was my best guess at the time, but it seemed odd that the rover palette was duplicated just for that.
Second, I'd still love some tooltips for the obstacle palette. I know you were in some pretty deep discussions about the obstacle palette earlier in this thread, though, so maybe you're holding off until you completely revamp that part.
I wonder, though, why the obstacle palette doesn't just work like the rover palette - i.e., you click on an obstacle, and that's what you get when you click in the sequencing matrix. So, click on a particular rover, and a single left click inserts that rover. Click on an obstacle instead, and a single left click inserts that obstacle. Seems simple and makes the most sense to me.
The new repetition probability helps with dialing in a little variety, as does the velocity jitter. Would there be some way, though, to add some sort of note length jitter as well? If each note length weren't precisely the same, it would help reduce the mechanical quality of the sound. I realize the note length is based on tempo, but maybe the jitter could mean a certain probability that note length is one increment (maybe an eighth) longer or shorter?
Anyway, thanks again for all your work.

I finally had the chance to play with this. What a fun little tool. I kind of just dove in and messed around not realizing what I was doing, but that's how I like to approach these types of tools. If you know too much about how to control things you don't come across as many happy accidents.

Are you including the name of the folder that contains the scales as part of the path defintion in the .ini file ? For example, if you have your scales in a folder at "x:\mymachine\data\nova\scales" then use that whole path as the value in the .ini file.DarkStar wrote:(a) when I click on the Scale arrow it takes me to the folder containing the "scales" folder not into the "scale" folder itself. Yup, will try to address that on the next release.DarkStar wrote:(b) the left and right Climb sliders scale markers have some bright markers and a mix of single and double thickness.
I've had some frustration with those buttons. They have been through a few redesigns and I'm not totally happy with them yet. There have been many times that I clicked the wrong button during an interactive session and deleted or overwrote a pattern instead of restoring it to the matrix. Argh, not fun. I ended up making the save and restore buttons different enough to catch my eye (helps a little) and separating them by the delete button (helps a little) but am still not happy with the layout or the interaction. I am considering some kind of auto-lock mechanicm so that when a pattern is saved it is automatically locked and cannot be deleted or overwritten unless explicitly unlocked (by clicking an unlock button). That would work for my workflow but maybe not so much for others. Open to suggestions ...DarkStar wrote:(c) Can the Delete and Load pattern buttons be changed? The default scale is D A Bb C D E F A C which is one of the scales used by the Hang Drum. There are several YouTube videos of the Hang that are worth checking out if you have never heard one. The default scale is baked into the plugin so that it still makes notes even if there are not any scale files present or loaded. It seems useful to be able to define a DefaultScale in the .ini file that would cause that scale to be loaded when a new instance of the plugin is inserted .. that is not possible now but it could show up in a future release. In the mean time you could edit the contents of 00-default.txt to be whatever scale you want, or copy the Western Major scale file to something like 000-major.txt so that it sorts alphabetically before 00-default.txt, and load the scale after inserting the plugin. Once a scale has been loaded the plugin remembers the scale notes internally so you should not have to reload it after saving and restoring a project.DarkStar wrote:(d) what scale is the 00-default.txt.
