Well, if we scale it to that measure we could also introduce Reaktor to the debate. It goes far beyond Numerologys "hard wired" capabilities and indeed there were fascinating sequencer creations made in Reaktor. I once "coded" a Seq for Reaktor myself and have not seen its concept realized elsewhere until today.

But one has to find a compromise between complexity, usability, stability, price, etc. I'm sure you share this opinion. Whatever fits to your task or need is suitable.

It's of course a matter of taste but I like the ones that drive Krypt, Massive (both for drums) and Akkord (Chords). Then there are tons when you browse the userlib. Search Sequarium for mine (but it's only good for percussive sounds like Piano or so as I never managed to handle the note-off properly). Personally I'm not a huge fan of the "esoteric" stuff based on DNA algorithms, zodiac signs and whatnot. A seq should be at least a bit predictable IMHO.

I tried Era, but after 30 minutes of futilely trying to change the note values of the drum grid rows, I have zero interest in continuing with it.

Right-click the track-number (block on left hand side, not in the track-row window) and set the desired note.

Well , if you use Reaper, this awesome sequencer that the OP was about is actively being developed.
Right now, its at the stage where at least i can get basic beats going in a coupla minutes.

Hopefully the future holds more.

And yeah ERA was all kinda awesome, except a little confusing n discontinued.

I think a number of skins I've seen of Reaper look as professional as well, many other DAWs out there... I've had a license for years but what I don't like about it is the emphasis on audio not midi. And the frightening drop-down menus. I know you can customize but I'm going in the opposite direction in my life... trying to simplify.

Sorry, I do like your style most of the time, but that is a seriously stupid argument.

Most people that 'stick' with Reaper do so because they feel 'at home' for one or another reason... you know, like it is with almost every user of every other DAW. Reaper's pricing is pretty awesome, but at the end of the day it comes down to how it meets your workflow and other demands.

Note; coming from old style sequencer software (twentyfour and cubase on Atari) with all it's midi-editing mojo, Reaper did for a long time not fulfill my needs in that area. But I guessed that the way and speed it is being developed it would certainly come. And I must say that lately Reaper is getting there in leaps and bounds. Now THAT is why I use it
