JM Jarre bigs up Kontakt
You have few steps in the history of sampling: Fairlight was one, and Kontakt was the other one It has been a big new change in music
Then he continues: Do your own sampling as much as you can
So how can you sample with Kontakt?

You can't. I'm pretty sure Jarre implied scripting as the next big step in sampling, which Kontakt pioneered.

You are right as usual
Blowing up an image from his screen, seems Jarre has done some Kontakt scripting himself, as Studio JM Jarre
Elka Synthex is of course one of the sounds

One thing that would be great with Kontakt 6 is if it installs less PDF documents
Installing Kontakt Player one a separate computer now, means that I also got installed 57.6MB of PDF manuals, in 4 or 5 languages

I think you can just delete all the manuals (or any other pdf documents) that you don't want.

Appreciating that we're likely into K6 beta by now and all wishes are purely that, here's a few things it would be nice to see....
1. Wizards. Should be possible to drag in a whole load of samples, and Kontakt figure out a likely way to arrange them - if you had 20 multisamples, it should be able to tell what notes they are, arrange them across the keyboard and stretch to fill the gaps [EDIT - even better, just a single wav and figure out velocities and pitches]. Assign a zone(s), then ask a few basic questions (looping? DFD? etc).
2. UI-builder. Have some themes based on different styles and heights, with a uniform look to the faders and controls for each. Drag and drop effects, ADSR etc.
3. Revamped library pane (this is highly likely to happen imo). Smaller icons arranged by grid a la Kontrol (but with none of the other Kontrol UI horrors please). Folders would be awesome.
4. Enhanced database in pop up window to allow for full width.
5. Better memory usage info and management - report total memory used by each instrument, not just used by the samples. Not just purge samples, but fully release memory from closed instruments.
6. Quick access to edit 8 basic macros per instrument, which auto-assign to NKS but also Cubase's Quick Controls.
A chap can dream can't he?

Wizards is a good idea ... anything that makes it more immediate to use is a winner, for impromptu on the fly sessions where you can drag a freshly recorded audio clip from the daw right in to the kontakt gui and have it auto-mapped or whatnot ...

I'd like a simpler method of audio channel I/O management. Something closer to Halion and Falcon. I'm not a fan of the interface, but I doubt that is changing since they use that same form as a template in everything.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

Isn't that already possible since version 2 or so?noiseboyuk wrote: 1. Wizards. Should be possible to drag in a whole load of samples, and Kontakt figure out a likely way to arrange them

Yeah there's automap setup... it just needs to be ran manually AFTER you drop the samples in.
It might be cool to offer the automap setup when you drop the samples along with a keyboard modifier (example in MachFive/Falcon - you hold Alt, the dialog pops up with options for mapping).

The existing auto-mapping is certainly better than nothing, but it's easy to imagine something far more sophisticated. Rather than basing it (after sample import) on file names etc, actually analyzing the audio in the content is what I have in mind. You could have a single wav with someone playing a clarinet staccato, say, at 4 velocities per note, playing a dozen notes. With no other information, it should be possible to determine which notes are playing, what the relative velocities are, and have a good stab at mapping them across the keyboard and by key velocity. Importing a multi-channel wav - with different mic positions could be automatically handled as well, separating into (say) 4 channels each edited the same - all the user would have to do is label each mic position.
You get the idea, anyway. It's all doubtless a pipe dream for K6, but a product like that (along with a UI editor) might actually get me interested in the nuts and bolts of sampling again - taking all the real grunt work out of chopping, editing, naming etc.

Yeah, that's not the goal NI set for K6 so don't hold your breath. There was software that did it perfectly, it was called Redmatica Keymap. It's extinguished now (better said, dumbed down and stripped to like 5% of its original functionality, then thrown into Mainstage), thanks to Apple. :/
But that IS the beauty of it, the REAL nuts and bolts of sampling!noiseboyuk wrote:taking all the real grunt work out of chopping, editing, naming etc.

I know - that's such a crying shame, isn't it? It would be neatest as part of Kontakt itself, but there has to be a market for a 3rd party solution (unless its considered too close to Redmatica's IP). Having something that could build both the mapping and the UI would be dynamite, it all feels pretty dark ages at the moment.EvilDragon wrote:Yeah, that's not the goal for K6 so it won't happen.
