You are lucky that I am such a fluffy guy, else I would have to report you for abusing the quote feature :hihi:
I have indeed never had a Minimoog, but I have played several analog synths and owned one, unfortunately only the JX-8P :P And I do know Moog sounds from older records, although of course they will have been manipulated with certain effects... Then again, they probably didn't manipulate the sound so that it sounded worse than dry 8)

Thanks... heh

I strongly suggest you do not go down to a local shop and play a Moog ;-)

Is this discussion only present because fluffy said Sylenth1 does the analog emulation thing very well, or is this just another discussion VA vs. A? Because, you know, that's pretty yawnable. An analog synth can't do 4 voices of 8-voice unison per oscillator, which Sylenth does. It can't be used simultaneously with 20 instances too.

I don't live in NY or Frankfurt, I have not seen any such shop here in my city, they know people can't really afford such expensive gear. I suppose I would have to go to the capital...

Right, we'll just call it a big coincidence then.
Sylenth1 was programmed 8 years ago. In meanwhile, a dozen "Sylenth1-killers" came into play...

A decent plugin does the trick, to put it that way. If I were a pro I would get hardware as well I suppose. But as a hobby musicians I am happy with what plugins offer these days. More than happy, because when I grew up there was nothing like this. I could not afford good hardware.

The instance argument is really key to me as well. About a half year ago I was thinking of buying a hardware synth, but ultimately I decided against it. I asked myself, do I really need it or only want it?

Indeed, Sylenth, Hive, etc. can make sounds that a Minimoog can't ;)

Naaa... not VA vs A... but I did bring it up to point out how Fluffy says Sylenth sounds good compared to other quite similar softsynths... but in the VA vs A thread (and elsewhere) he says Sylenth is good enough to emulate a Moog.

Sonically, Sylenth and Dune2 (for example) are pretty much interchangeable for similar sounds whereas the Moog is quite different.

That the difference matters between the softsynths, but not the analogue synth shows that Fluffy is mainly being a fanboy of Sylenth and not making a consistent argument.

Sylenth, Dune etc. indeed sound clearly better than normal SE stuff, not least because there is no aliasing and other noise on chords. Soundwise a good plugin is probably closer to a hardware synth than to a normal SE plugin (i.e. the ones using stock oscillators, filters, etc.). With the latter in most cases the bass octaves are lacking high frequency components, thus they sound muffled, which is simply not the way it should be because it is not the way it is on hardware, either. Nor is it on good plugins.

I like Sylenth, yes. Why am I labeled a fanboy because of that, which is not exactly a compliment?

Yes because then you'll discover how crappy real analog synths sound.........

Good enough for thousands of talented musicians to use them on countless legendary records though.

Good heavens, are we actually comparing Sylenth1 to a Minimoog? These two instruments have nothing in common. The Mini has its sound and Sylenth1 has its sound. I mean can we at least compare apples to apples?

(IMHO Sylenth *is* the new Minimoog, e.g. in terms of importance for contemporary music)

Ah yes, not only do they make great synths but Urs has a sense of humor too. LOL.

I love these discussions, I was actually reading trough a topic yesterday where wagtunes needed 30+ posts to convince everybody he doesn't want to pay €139 for Sylenth1. I'm not sure why he needed 30 replies because 1 was probably enough. Sylenth1 does not meet with your expectations, that's perfectly fine. I can't hardly understand why you would bother wasting so much time ranting on something that doesn't fit you. ;)

I think these discussions are like the 'Samsung vs. Apple' discussions, endless, pointless and useless. There's no gain in it for anyone, if Sylenth1 doesn't work for you, that's fine with us... Just remember we're talking about music, there's no evil in music, just keep creating

That's the thing. For some, it isn't enough to decide that synth or plugin XY is not for them, they need to convince others that it isn't worth for them too. :) Anyway, no need to take these discussions more serious than they are really. There's loads of hot talk on the net. Best to make up your own mind, and don't care too much about the shmopinions.
