You can use clip envelopes and warp points to make hundreds of different versions of the same loop. And then play them with your keyboard and record new loops if you like.
How can you do that with Sonar?
You can do this in Sonar with Cyclone DXi. Though maybe not to the same extent as is possible with Live, it fits my needs at the moment. I've never tried to do an entire tune in Cyclone but it seems capable enough. Cyclone is a plug-in not a streamlined, full featured product. Also, as fate would have it, Cyclone was "created" by the geniuses at ableton. :D

pHz quoth just for clarification - i was talking about buying live4 from scratch when its released rather than buying live3 now

Well they mention a 'grace' upgrade free for those buying 3 after May 15th, so I was just drawing attention to what appears to be the cheapest way currently of getting 4...

Live 3 does not support multiple ins/outs, i'm not shure about Live 4, probably not.

Just downloaded the demo of Live 3, and had a quick play. it took me all of about 5 minutes to see why this thing is f**king amazing! So quick and easy to get going with a few clips and loops.

A few questions for experienced users though:

1. Can i get a drum loop, and for example make a variation that would just be the kick drum going over and over? This way i could de-construct home-rolled loops back to constituent parts for building up and breaking down. Because this would save having to make a kick-only loop, then a kick/hat loop, then a kic/hat/snare loop etc.

2. Can you actually use the sequencer bit as a traditional sequencer, or does it ONLY rcord your jamming in the session view? In other words, can i construct tracks from loops a la Acid Pro?

Must save! Must get Live! :D

quincy the answer is a resounding 'absolutely yes' to both of your questions.

svartling: abelton have already said that 'yes'Live4 does support multiple outs, no one has asked about multiple ins, but I hope they did implement it, don't see why they wouldn't no one had requested the multiple outs and they did this for Live4!

According to Robert Henke (from Ableton) on the Ableton forum, the answer is yes on MIDI outs, but I'm not sure about ins as he didn't say.
whyterabbyt wrote: And if MIDI loops can be MIDI-note triggered, can you set up a MIDI loop which triggers other MIDI loops?
I don't know how you would do that. Each track is assigned a specific MIDI channel, so how would you trigger another MIDI channel from within a clip? That would be pretty freakin cool, but I can't get my head around how it would work.

Ok thanks for the info. It's hard to read all the news about this amazingly looking update from Ableton

Using EnergyXT it will be possible using the chord, midipart or sequencer modules.

Live 4> EnergyXT (as a VST plug in)> Chord module (you can have as many keys mapped to Live clips as you want)>EnergyXT midi out (hopefully Live 4 supports VST midi outs)> Live 4> Clips

Yeah, ta. Ive already got eXT, I was just wondering if Ableton supported this sorta thing 'natively'.

I guess the question is now if AL4 supports MIDI-output from VSTs

Would be nice if it had MFX support as well... :)

I think Live 4 looks great. I can't wait to get to work on balancing things out workflow wise with that and everything else. I think people here at this forum generally get too excited about certain new releases. This deals with everything. Every time a new synth comes out everyone starts ranting that their search is over and oh god how amazing, itll rock the foundation of the industry as we know it. Which of course is BS. Two weeks later that same perosn is pining over something else.
I think it's an amazing time to be a consumer in this industry. This is good healthy competition and with Ableton in the game, everyone else will step up. I'm not dumping any of my current gear as i pretty much already incorporated Live 3 really well. I do think Emagic/Apple, Steinberg and the like will come up with great things for the future. Noones even seen Logic 7 really. Instead of saying everything else will die, lets encourage it all....this is progression, and its F'ing wonderful!

Go Ableton! Screw it, go software! :D

I'm just happy to be able to have all these great products available!

Yeah I agree to a certain extent, the amount of shortcuts I have worked up in Logic is unbelievable, but I've never really like the way traditional Arrange windows force you to mouse around to rearrange the parts of a song, and Live completely kills the competition with this.
I sincerely doubt that Live 4's MIDI will be up to Logic/Sonar/Digital Performer/ SX standards though. I bet it's comparable to what Reason offers. I'll probably end up starting songs in Logic, then dumping them in Live for the arrangement and improvising of them.

Multiple Ins are supported as well. This is what I ment with side chain inputs.
