Good informative post.n9 wrote:Saturation can be truly wonderful. If you're asking why people would want to emulate tape I guess my answer is that when tape was a dominant media for recording and reproducing sound many, many very smart and committed people spent many many hours figuring out how to make it sound the best it could possibly sound... with many definitions of what "best" would mean. Engineers spent countless hours and lots of money figuring out how to record symphony orchestras with a great deal of accuracy and high fidelity. Other engineers spent their hours figuring out how to get rock bands to sound big and amazing and hip hop producers figured out how you could push a tape to make a sampled drum loop sound bigger... and the list goes on.
In the 80s and 90s everyone "switched to digital" because of many reasons, but mainly because it was thought that it would "just sound better." Turns out that for a lot of reasons it generally did not sound better, and a lot of the reasons were that engineers had figured out how to create beautiful, resonant sounds out of the idiosyncrasies and nonlinear properties of tape. Tape was not pristine and accurate, maybe, but there were a lot of interesting and effective things that you could do with it.
For me, tape is yet another wonderfully deep way to square off the tops and bottoms of those waveforms. You can drive it a little and get an effect that sounds subtle, but when you turn it off you miss it. You can push it harder and get some truly wild behaviors related to saturating the media itself, the preamps and op amps in the device, to the math that I don't understand that relates to the bias... try pushing a sine wave into a tape machine some time... it is really weird. Sent questions to Softube support, on focus:
1. tape as offline installer in account after purchase ?
2. to be continued in parallel to Gobbler ?
3. what does non support for Win 7 exactly means ?
Hope I catched the core questions and I`ll copy & paste,
if more topics of real interest, lemme know and I`ll pick them up on reply.

Having witnessed this happen first hand, I can wholeheartedly say that I disagree with the statement to an extent. I've heard and read people say that they prefer the sound of vinyl and tape because it "sounds better" than digital recordings, but I've never been able to replicate their findings - especially with genres of music such as classical. Digital recordings trounce analog time and time again in these instances - tape included.n9 wrote:

That said – I've never owned +$1000 record player or thousand dollar tape deck/reel-to-reel. When a sub $100 CD player can playback pristine digital recordings, it's hard to compare.

I really like this plugin. I can't really make it sound "bad". I've been using the Waves Kramer Master tape - and I can make that sound very bad, with the wrong settings.
This plugin seems to have a little more "oomph" on the bottom end (than the Kramer) - and I bought it.
I can verify that you can download Softube (offline) installers from your account, andyou don't have to use gobbler. The activations are in your ilok account and you can just manage them yourself.

According to this video B Mode is an ATR replica.Endor-8o8 wrote:A should be Studer, B = Ampex and C = EMI...if I'm not mistaking.jbraner wrote:Sorry if I'm being dense, so isType A is based on a classic Swiss high end reel-to-reel machine, known and loved for its precision and linearity.
Type B is much more colorful—it's a transformer based machine which adds extra weight and cream to the low end.
Lastly, Type C is based on a British tape machine with a distinct vintage vibe.
A = Nagra?
What is B?
C=EMI?

perhaps I should have been more specific. The mid 80s "switch to digital" era just sounded bad. The first several generations of digital equipment was inferior to what it replaced and the digital workflows that replaced analog in TV, radio and post facilities, etc, delivered years of poor quality sound, imo. People figured it out eventually, I think, and now Digital doesn't sound worse than analog to my ears. But I also work ITB with a lot of emulated analog processing.
But compare some of the 1985 era digital classical recordings (good luck finding them) with 1980 era EMI recordings. Your opinion might differ from mine but I very much prefer the "late analog" recordings to the "early digital."
For rock it is much worse. Records from as late as 1992-5 suffer from shit digital recording and mastering. The Ramones sound much better than The Pixies and My Bloody Valentine's Loveless is a masterpiece but the cassette release sounds better than the CD!

Here's what Softube support answered me concerning the grouping function in Tape :
"This is Maxus from the Softube support team.
Thank you so much for reaching out.
Of course, I can't comment on upcoming releases or features. I'd advise you to keep checking for updates!"
Don't know if it means that they're gonna add it...maybe if other people ask about it they'll make it happen. They should do that, it's the only thing I'm missing with this plug-in.

a kind of "bonus" for a specific daw. It should be a stock function for everyone. Cumulative effect and multitrack uses are just obvious for this kind of tool. Especially when they say that the light CPU footprint gives the opportunity to use it on several tracks...
