VZ-1 voice architecture is similar to the Yamaha DX synthesizers in that you have several oscillators that link together to generate extra harmonics via some form of algorithm. Where the DX7 has six oscillators to choose from, the VZ has eight
If it can be compared to DX7, you might want to check out FM8
Or check out Dexed FM Synth :tu:

Is there a big difference between VZ-1 and FZ-1 ?

SynthMagic brought out a very nice Kontakt instrument based on FZ-1 that Casio lovers might want to check out too: http://www.synthmagic.co.uk/fzed.htm

DX7 were produced from 1983 to 1987, VZ1 was launched on 1988, when the M1 and D50 were gaining public, and after a lot of DX's and CZ's, of course it was cheaper than the original DX7. In fact, there are too many diferences between these two synth engines to say which is the best.

Oh, and FZ1 is a sampler, not another FM/PD

VSE says it's a hybrid synth/sampler, and doing additive synthesis in the 80's wasn't that a matter of FM/PD?

"FZ-1 also has a built-in synthesizer section. It uses digital synthesis employing both harmonic additive synthesis and waveform drawing. Basic waveforms available include sawtooth, square, pulse, double sine, saw/pulse, random waves and 48 harmonics."

I think that the Phasewave synth by Tubeohm is a very excellent phasedistortion synth that can make Casio Cz and Casio VZ sounds.
You should check the demo or the free version:
