Keeping in the spirit of your post’s title, I think the quantifier of “worst” makes the grade, strictly due to the FX-500's UI… pretty much a PITA to program quickly. But, many of those early Yamaha effect algorithms seem to meet the “deserve emulation” criteria, I think.

Yeah, they're a lot of fun. Just standard bucket brigade delay with presets for different delay lengths for flange, double,and echo, plus a knob to manually adjust the delay time within that. It does fun tape delay type pitchshifting when you tweak it. But it is pretty noisy, if I recall.

It would be part of the B team, when you needed a modulated delay or doubling but you couldn't sacrifice the Lexicon PCM 41 or the Eventide.

It seems you could adjust the routing of this. Awkward to do, but could be done.

Also, while I didn't look at all of the schematics, a quick glance at the overdrive in the model meant for guitars and it's really clear that it's essentially (if not exactly) the clipping and tone sections from a TS-808.

I was going to comment early on your idea that Ibanez repurposed pedal tech in this. I used to have one and I can tell you they were unique effects and didn't sound like similar Ibanez pedals of the time. I think they did this to differentiate the UE400 from other products, which would make business sense. I can't say for sure, never having access to a UE400 schematic.

However, the output buffers and input preamps will contribute to the sound. I'll explore for fun over the next few days as I have time, unless someone wants to beat me to it, of course?

FWIW I have an Ibanez UE303B floor multi-fx from the same era and the circuits of the AutoFilter, Compressor and Stereo Chorus/Flanger are identical to the respective stompboxes (AF9, CP9, CS9/FL301) from the time.

I'm not surprised. I would think that the UE-400 might have been one of the earliest multi-fx and so that, along with the switched routing may have been all of the "differentiation" that they needed.

Possibly, but, it could just be that they have it plugged inline with the guitar amp and have the gain turned up too high because the guitar is plugged directly into the processor which does not have a hi-z input. That old VOX almost certainly does not have an effects loop.
