Which reverb is popular / used mostly 2023?

Blackhole is very much an effect reverb that easily takes over whatever you feed into it. There's nothing transparent or realistic about it, so it really just comes down to whether you like its sound signature or not. I do, but still prefer Valhalla Shimmer for that type of ambient/atmospheric vibe. I also like Baby Audio's Spaced Out and think it's a bit underrated in that category of spacey reverbs.

Despite it being outstanding, I personally do not like the Blackhole's reverb. It is no doubt an excellent reverb for someone that wants super long warm shimmery tails, but I never want that, so...
I actually prefer Supermassive (and even it isn't my thing).
IDK, I just like really cold '80s style algorithmic reverbs. Things like the Boss RV-3 (but not later models).

I love the sound of Blackhole but can never get it sitting well in a mix. I've made these awesome modulated reverbs using the ribbon to dial up boiling kettle resonance but it just vanishes or adds mud with other instruments around it. But it's still cool to use. Nice to do some choppy gates to the tail.stoopicus wrote: Thu Nov 16, 2023 9:02 pm Despite it being outstanding, I personally do not like the Blackhole's reverb. Recently grabbed Comet by polyverse which is nice. My go to is generally still NI Raum, or Waves IR1.

OrilRiver is your friend. Pretty fantastic for realistic room and hall reverberations.stoopicus wrote: Thu Nov 16, 2023 9:02 pm Despite it being outstanding, I personally do not like the Blackhole's reverb. OrilRiver doesn’t live up to the hype. Not to mention it’s not native Apple Silicon and is no longer under development.
If you’re looking for a free high quality reverb, I recommend Acon Digital Verberate Basic.

THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

LOL it absolutely does live up to the hype.jamcat wrote: Fri Nov 17, 2023 7:02 am OrilRiver doesn’t live up to the hype. Not to mention it’s not native Apple Silicon and is no longer under development.

And I've tested all the free reverbs and demoed several commercial ones at the time before finding OrilRiver. It's leaps and bounds above Acon Verberate, which, incidentally, is mediocre in comparison (at least it was when I demoed Verberate 1 years ago).
edit: you kinda forced me to try again Verberate 2 basic, and I can reafirm that its sound hasn't changed, it's still quite mediocre and extremely limited compared to OrilRiver. I'd rather use OldSkoolVerb instead for a similar but more versatile reverb.

Not sure how much they were used in 2023, but the best for me still Waves IR-1, Renaissance Reverb and H-Reverb, and also Waves Abbey Road reverbs.
Afaik the most used in professional music productions since the time plugins are used is Renaissance Reverb.

It's definitely pretty good!!martiu wrote: Thu Nov 16, 2023 11:08 am i dont know about all of you here but i never found a reverb as smooth and beautiful sounding like Blackhole, i will keep searching but so far no luck and that makes alien sad![]()
2caudio Breeze has an incredibly smooth large space sound. I am reluctant to purchase it though as its not clear where that company is at.
Realtor has a reverb called Spacemaster that is also really good for such things, maybe finer 'grains' than black hole but a bit less lush
NI Raum can also do this quite nicely.
Some Valhalla algorithms can also be good some in VVV but the free Supermassive has some great takes on this.

Black hole needs the space in the mix I find as it's quite 'grainy'swilow11 wrote: Thu Nov 16, 2023 10:14 pmI love the sound of Blackhole but can never get it sitting well in a mix. But you should also be able to EQ it and clean it up.
Raum is a smooth clean large verb for sure.

From my humble experience i'd say that it is mandatory at least two reverbs - one clean / invisible as Nimbus to add gently smooth space and second big lush reverb for massive sound of the mix._leras wrote: Sat Nov 18, 2023 9:02 pmBlack hole needs the space in the mix I find as it's quite 'grainy'swilow11 wrote: Thu Nov 16, 2023 10:14 pmI love the sound of Blackhole but can never get it sitting well in a mix. Logically for 3D must be used 3 different type of reverbs, each to have specific dimension to create, but programming is complex.
3D is more of trade mark, than real deal in stereo mixing, cause from two speakers is basically impossible to hear what you hear in real space with 360 degree positioned sound sources ,all the reverberations and complex layering in 3D enviroment.
I prefer not to try to achieve any 3D, but to simulate an effect a man hear when walk along multiple speakers and sound sources - inside the mix it will complex layering of instruments, which change their intensity and positioning,as listener this is way more dynamic and interesting to me than standard simulation of space inside the mix.
Basically i like any kind of experiments and innovations, cause we all already tried all the tricks and techniques used in the past and it's so boring just to replicate them, instead of making something new as experiment.
The only bad side of such philosophy is that most of experiments are failure, before to achieve something significant hihihihi
Cheers
