I jump up the mids with NWEQ and use various reverbs (Princeton being one of them) and finally the GPP-1 limiter for hugeness. I'm getting a crunchy chord sound that is scary close to real sounding, with just a bit more of the digital "fiz" highs than a real mic'ed amp would have (obviously) . I will post some mp3's here before long.
Here's one to try...

Use two instances of Trash running in series...

Use one of the Zoned presest on the 1st (I Lke B as its a bit less noisy) ... Use one of the Guitar Rockabilly presets on the 2nd (I like the Rockabilly Lead)...

Thanks for the tip, I'll try it.

I've also gotten some real happy sounds doing the same parallel setup but with Rednef Twin and using Trash's clean sounds. I'm getting sounds reminiscent of Garcia, et. al.

I like to run two VST sims in parallel because I feel they kind of fill one another out a bit more than with the single sim. There are probably complex phase relationships involved as well as just superimposing harmonics.

Today I tried Rednef Twin in parallel with X-Amp set clean and I also ran a healthy bit of dry signal from my rack through (Ampeg SVT-IIP (for both guitar and bass), Joemeek comp and EQ, and a Chinese stereo tube hi-fi preamp). I'm getting some nice organic cleans from this setup as well, for leads and chords.

For direct guitar I'm using a lot of Kjaerhus GMO-1 modulation effect,w hich adds some smoothness and dimension to the sound.

Always experimenting... :D

As far as clean and SRV edge-of-breakup stuff, I'm starting to believe more and more that you can go direct and not have to sacrifice the better part of good tone. I have a Victoria amp, vintage Jensen and Vox speakers, etc., and I'm actually content for the time being to avoid the trouble of mic'ing and just to keep going with the convenience of DI and software. With distortion, particularly heavy lead sounds, it's not quite there yet, although, as I emntioned earlier, I've just started getting impressive results for crunchy rhythm guitar.
