Yes that's definitely a possibility as there seems to be a point on the horizon where good free synths are very limited and a used one might be the better option.
@yessongs: In the Music Cafe section of the forums here there are similar monthly competitions but where drums, guitars and anything can be used. The challenge here is obviously to synthesize all those sounds, which can be fun in itself. As you can hear, some acoustic instruments can really be nailed.

Hey, guys!
Another 2 suggestions: How'bout free Reactor player? PC and Mac compatible, comes with 3 synthesizers inside. Carbon 2 (subtractive) looks very promising. And even more, one might add free Micro-Prism. That would be a crazy OSC.
Also there is a new U-he freebie: Podolski (Mac/PC). Hope this would help to someone who makes the choice.
What do you, guys, think?

I like NI stuff, too; it's a bit heavier on RAM than I'd like, though...
Two windows-only synths, whenever a vote comes up:
Atlantis - surprised this was never picked; it's really flexible and the UI is pretty good once you "get it" (http://jeremyevers.com/atlantis/)
MauSynth - looks nice, not sure how great it sounds; sorta generic (http://rinki.net/pekka/mausynth/)

Another +1 for Podolski. Love that little guy.
The Computer Music collection is so easily accessible now I really hope to see more synths from that.
I'd also be really happy if the plugs from the CM collection were allowed. Maybe that could be part of the next rules poll that comes around?

Since those contests, Synth1 was ported to OS X, so there will be more people with a copy.

If we do Synth1 again, I'm going to finish a full guide / manual I made for it... It's much easier to read than the Daichi's reference.

Podolski is definitely on the short list as that's one of the few remaining top cross platform Mac/PC synths.
The free Native Instruments synths are attractive for the same reason, but like pointed out earlier, one needs to install a lot of junk and extra programs that might put a lot of people off.
Same with Waldorf Largo. It has a fully functional demo and is one of the best sounding synths, but needs to install soft eLicenser and .NET (for those who don't have it). Otherwise it would be an extremely fun OSC.
MauSynth has been suggested by others before so seems popular, Atlantis is also a good one, but both are PC only and obviously tough competition in the PC only class (think Elektrostudio etc).
Another thing to consider is to have a variation in synth styles as well so even ambient synths like one from H.G. Fortune or digital FM's like FMMF or an ODO synth might come next.

This is a bit off topic: Spin off from OSC - music for my videos
Last week I held a presentation in our community about my hobby astrophotography. In a powerpoint presentation I told them what astrophotography is all about, what equipment one needs and a bit about my history in this hobby. In addition I made three videos, showing my result a bit animated and together with the music I made. So I could combine both of my hobbies. Most of you will recognice the two tracks from the OSC!
I put them now on YouTube. If you like to watch and listen:

- Nebulas
