No, it's an expensive "hobby". So do what's right for you.
Personally I went from software to hardware, simply because I spend all day long staring at a computer screen, and found it uninspiring to stare at a plugin on a different screen later in the evening.
Now I just go down to my studio, flick on a few switches and amready to play and record after 20 seconds (about the time it takes for the Iridium to boot). I don't have to worry about first updating the DAW, then plugins, then wonder: "Why don't I have any audio?" after launching the DAW
