Wacvst is a Windows emulator that will run some PC VSTs on OS X.

For OSX users ...

I got this running last night on Mac OSX in a round about way.

I installed wine via macports (this takes a couple of hours)
I installed the Jack OSX package
I installed JACKWASIO
I installed VSTHost which runs fine in Wine ...
I put the SQ80 VST dll and directory where it belongs ...

I can play it via my controller but I haven't set it up with MIDI yet. I hope to work that out tonight. I'll let everyone know how it goes ...

FWIW I am struggling with two things on OSX:

1) Apparently wine has known MIDI communications issues. I can get the controller to play notes on the VST but I cannot get MIDI-out from some other device to control it.
2) Latency is a huge problem. Sometimes I can literally count the seconds between when I press a note and hear it. Other times its fine.

Wine seems to be quite idiosyncratic (it is trying to do a lot, to be fair). I found, other than simply running MIDI to a second machine running Windows, the most stable way of running Windows VSTs like this was to run Renoise under Parallels (VMWare should be just as usable) and run the audio back using Soundflower. Renoise was the one Windows host that played nicely with ASIO4All; I never got the standalone version of Bidule to play nice with ASIO. The MIDI was delivered using MusicLab's network MIDI driver. However, I already owned Parallels for work and had a licence for MIDIOverLan, so it's far from the cheapest option if you don't have those things.

Wacvst/Wine worked quite nicely until I installed Snow Leopard. I think it's possible to get a stable implementation now but that's an area that's still evolving. I think Wine will get there in the end. I'm going to give Crossover a whirl at some point to see how well that works, but I think even that has issues with MIDI.

I owned an Esq1 and had access to the SQ80 and I love this synth.
It is as real as real can be!
When is the SQX coming Sigi?

Have you tried Reaper, and selecting jackwasio as its asio driver?
Reaper is the best vst host for wineasio on linux, maybe it will help you too.

I have to say that I did pick up an SQ80 because I was hanker'n for the real thing and I was disappointed. It went back on ebay. The UI of the hardware is no gem and overall the plug in is really just as good and easier to use. My only request would be to loose the UI based on the hardware and come up with one with more direct control of each perimeter. Why be constrained to something that was limited by money and space?

I strongly agree, there's no reason to mantain this kind of UI... I admit that this has always been the showstopper for me with this Vsti.

Well, I'd hardly call it a show stopper. It's pretty logically laid out, as is the hardware, but I'd love to see a "pro" version where it had more flexibility in mod routing, ala a mod matrix or something. But in the end, we're looking a very nice gift horse in the mouth. I wouldn't mind buying it though if it contained these features.
