you can blend the whole layer if this helps
(but if the question is targeted at PSD import - it won't import most of the special features, PS is probably too much self-orientated already to have opened up more of the PSD specs)

Has anyone done a good skin for Project 5?
Also what happened to the ProTools and Logic skins - I can't find them on Assecas site? (I use the ProTools one in Bidule - similar look)

Layer blending effects, layer styles, layer effects, all the same thing. Basically it's a proprietary way to have 'presets' for visual effects; drop shadow, inner shadow, glow, bevel, stroke, gradient fill, color overlay, texture, etc. It's one of the things PS rocks ass for productivity for when you do repetitve things. Simply link the layers, copy your layer style, rightclick and choose 'Copy layer style to linked' and voila. This is the kind of productivity stuff PS has that other apps dont and can't compete in that arena for this reason. It's sad but true.Z3R0T0N1N wrote:what is blend effects?grymmjack wrote:nopers.fandango wrote:Do open-source apps like GIMP include Blend Effects on layers?

right...
i know what you are talking about now. you are right, that is a very nice feature. I switched almost all of my graphics work to the Gimp about 8 months ago, and i have actually started to like it better, but i wonder if some of that might be forgetting some of the features i used to know and use in PS
But at the same time, my productivity has not changed, and there are several things in Gimp that i like better.
I hope that they work out some kind of alternative for that, 'cause it could be a very nice thing to have in gimp.
anyway, thanx for the reply.

Xara has the same, and Corel too. But you don't need to right-click, just press ctrl+shift+a.
Anyway, I've removed all the old versions of my skin due to n00b error with incorrect screen gamma settings. So, with special thanks to BONES, here's my last version of ModernRetro for a while.

D/L most recent version here

Xara's isn't the same in terms of saving your presets. They can do similar things, but not as comprehensively as PS. I've tried to duplicate the workflow in Xara Xtreme and it's possible to a point. The copy/paste attribute helps, but AFAIK there is no "save all these different modifications/effects as a "group" and put them somewhere I can get them and drag them to other things/assign them en masse." in Xara X not the same as Photoshop which lets you do that with flair.pakana wrote:Xara has the same, and Corel too. Dunno about Corel, I avoid their products as much as possible as I prefer the Adobe way of working over Corels.

You're right, it requires saving them as .xar. Having them in a menu in every document would surely be more comfortable. Although I must say that doing basic things like shadows, bevels etc. is a lot faster as in image editing programs and presets for them is not my nr.1 feature request for Xara.grymmjack wrote:Xara's isn't the same in terms of saving your presets. I don't like the Adobe way of working, and investing horrible sums of money to their programs would not make output any better, but I have the feeling that CS is something inevitable... being Adobe-compatible would just make life easier.
Do you use Illustrator btw?

I'm still going to tweak certain bits, but in the meantime I've uploaded the current version. There's 2 versions. One with light buttons and one with dark buttons. The light one doesn't have an illuminated Stop button, as I don't generally think Stop should have a pushed state, but the graphic is in there if you want to use it.
