Hey, Is reason good for running lots of Vst instances? Also, how is its 3rd Party plugin compatability?.

Roughly on par with Live or Bitwig, so less than Cubase, Reaper or Studio One.

Only 64-bit VST2 are supported and not all of them, e.g. MIDI FX plugins (like Cthulhu, Captain Chords, Riffer, etc.) aren't really supported, unless you're satisfied with dragging MIDI out of them to the sequencer, i.e. Reason doesn't receive MIDI from plugins.

Wow thanks for responding so fast. Oh the non VST 3 support isn't a complete deal breaker but, it almost is. I don't use midi plugins but the fact that they aren't really supported is strange.

Thank you for the help!

I guess unique thing about Reason is that it started life as a complete self contained studio where you couldn't use (and arguably didn't need) VST plugins. With Reason you can making amazing music with it 'as is' - you arguably dint need anything else...the fx, instruments and midi players are as good as some of the best VSTS and everything works together with interconnectivity, modulation, routing etc...
X32 Desk, i9 PC, S88MK3, S1, BWS, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6 Pro3, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone II, OP1-F, OPXY, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

Do you need VST 3!

(I paradigm shifted with do you need VST at all, I am finding I don't bother as there is so much in Reason and I prefer to see it in the rack  )

Again, 100% agree. In fact I don't even have my VST paths set up in Reason, because I prefer to stay "native" (incl. lots of 3rd party REs I bought over the years).

I for one strongly disagree (for my own personal needs, I mean of course)... there's nothing that would come even close to Superior Drummer, guitar-amps are basically limited to the Kusassas, also the reverb-options are extremely limited, yadda yadda...

Yeah, guitar amp RE's are pretty limited in Reason - I can't believe I actually miss the Line 6 amps. Kuassa makes the only decent stuff, and the included Softube amps sims that replaced the Line 6 stuff are pretty bad by comparison, IMHO. And yeah, nothing can touch Superior Drummer - as it shouldn't, since Superior Drummer 3 literally costs as much as the entire Reason DAW.
Thankfully I don't need a virtual drum emulation for Reason. The guitar amps stuff, I do need though.

Oh Yeh, I am not saying I use Reason for everything (its not my only DAW ;-)) but it's great for synth/modular/electronic music self contained....It's the limitations that make me more productive!

I am a guitarist primarily but I don't use amp simulators much as I have a lot of amps and pedals :-)

I have an obscene amount of amps and pedals and what not too, but I basically never use them for recording these days...

As if subscribers are rolling in money.
That's not what second-class citizen means.

Quick question and sorry if that was asked before…
I have currently Reason 11 full version and Reason 12 Subscription installed.
What will happen when I decide to unsubscribe from 12 and buy the upgrade instead when available?
Will I loose all devices from subscription version?

Yes. You will. Any device that is exclusive to R+ will not be sold in the Reason perpetual license version, even on the same version number - so you'll lose them. That said, Mimic and the new Combinator are coming to Reason 12 perpetual license version, so you'll at least have those.

It will be interesting to see what is included with R12, especially now the suite option has gone. To be honest as I bought R11 Suite I am not even sure what the stock stuff is in R11?!
