:D
Here is my second installment of my take on this months tracks:

Shane Sanders - Tower of Babel
My favorite is the low grumbling moody bass part. The patch around 48 playing in support of the violin/fiddle type lead is fascinating, not sure what to call it, in some ways it sounds like a far away train horn, very haunting. The hand drum percussion adds allot of interest and mood without bringing too much attention to itself. A super movie track.

eman8ions - Standing on a high cliff
nice intro, Loved the echo-iey, looped ticking/swishing background sounds being run filtered and phased (or whatever). I really like the bass, it has plenty of oomph but stays subtle at the same time. Interesting mixture of peaceful stillness and energetic activity.

kovacs - Rocktronica
Loved the rhythm guitar parts especially the intro. The second guitar solo part is interesting.

Barnadine - Love Strikes
like the odd percussion sounds here and there. "Whoa-whoa" never hurts. Buddy Holly would approve thinks I.

respirator - Biggest Hit
loved the choruses. Great vocal style.

mchlwlsn - Jongleur
Great mix of super clean jazz piano and chorused guitar. Love the piano riff at about 48 sec. The drums and the bass are excellent, they stay out of the way of the leads but remain very listenable by thier own. The overall technical production values are superb, levels, mixing etc.

plunge - Tabasco
Liked the jazzy organ tones. Funky guitar work is very tasty. I really would enjoy this piece bunches more if the drum kit was turned down several notches. Nice composition and feel.

ZioKiller - Noisy Town
Wow! I can't believe I got this for free! Sublime intro. Wonderful levels. Funky, laidback jazzy feel. Beautiful Rhoads tones. Great special effects for intro and ending. First class hand drumming. Like how the bass fills out the mix without dominating it. I really like the Clav parts too.

remco - future bride
I liked the tone of the song until it switches to the future focus. I mean the atmosphere and presentation seems to be more in tune with the depressing side of the situation than the joyful conclusion. I really like the lead patches used. Interesting thing going on between the different melody parts. Also like the use of the string patch in the background in much of the song.

Katanaman - An Open Letter to the Man
Great energy! Manic drumming perfect for headbanging! The angst gushes from the speakers.

Right now, I'm listening to Brian Wilson presents Smile.

Lots of just over 2 minute sonic experiments in there.

Why not have the KVR contest for July be 'Upside-down Frown'?

We could add a couple of rules:

1. Must publish the key the 2 minute vignette is in. (reason - someone could arrange these in circle-of-5ths and mix-tape/mashup them - just like what Smile sound like.

2. 2 levels of contest - best Wilson-like vignette, and best 3 part mix tape of the previous submissions.

3. vignettes have to be submitted by 15th of July, mixes by 23rd of July.

erm.. what?

Who's brian wilson, what's a vignette? and what's upside down frowning got to do with it?..:?

OK, if you are from the US and didn't hear about Brian Wilson's Smile release in recent months, you must have been living under a rock. I don't know about the rest of the world.

Brian Wilson is the resident musical genius and official weirdo of the Beach Boys.

All of those vocal harmonies, the theremin, the whole sound, can almost be single handedly attributed to him.

He release 'Smile' this past year to wide acclaim, as it had been 34 years in the making.

'Upside down frown', is just a cute way to say 'Smile'.

'Vignette' means:
A short, usually descriptive literary sketch.
A short scene or incident, as from a movie.

This is what Brian Wilson's 'Smile' is; a collection of short musical stories all interwoven together.

Hopefully that clears things up.
consider me living under a rock then..

sorry.. some of us werent alive to listen to beach boys etc when it was new.. so we may or may not have an understanding or appreciation (if you will) of brian wilson and his music (even if smile is a new release..)

to be honest I dont think the beach boy's music was really all that great.. over-rated.. but thats my opinion.. I know several of you hold them in high regard :P

I havent heard smile (outside of a handful of the plonky 30 second clips at amazon) so I cant really say anything about the music persay but the style in the clips isnt doing anything for me at all.. we are on different wavelengths.

count me out of wilson vignettes compo :P

hmm your strange vitd.

As of this week the biggest selling song was a mobile phone polyphonic ring tone -

perhaps that would be a good theme for next months contest - polyphonic ring tones - and if someone here at KVR is completley onto it we could figure out what format - bitrate etc they are supposed to be in and we could try and sell them!!!!

I am a bit sick of the indiana jones theme song on my phone, although it does make my phone calls sound very important!

Maybe a set of polyphonic ring tones! one for text messages, one for phone calls - one for people we like and one for people we don't !!!! :)
Cell phone ring tones is a very lucrative business. The format of the ring tones is very exclusive, too, and companies vehemently guard the incryption.

I have to say I'm with VitaminD here - although I grew up during the beach boys hey-day, albeit in my preteens, I've never thought their stuff that great, and conjunctively I've never understood the acclaim of Mr Wilson's "musical genius", although I'll admit he is quite mad. And to add yet another blasphemy, I've never liked the Beatles........ :-o ...... Although, I do like a few of their songs, whereas I cannot say the same for the Beach Boys.

Please, let not any of this detract from your enjoyment of either, just count me out. :D

yeah.. we seem to be on a somewhat similar wavelength.. I consider the beatles overrated too... although they have a few songs I too like..

why not the collaboration idea that I suggested months ago?

this would be great on many levels/reasons.. just make sure to make it a 2-monther as some of us dont have time, inspiration, or bandwidth to keep passing project files back and forth in just one month.

I'll have to be paired up with another fellow orionaut though.. :hihi:

Post

I still like my ALL FOR FREE idea that spawned all this contest theme banter - which apparently is futile according to PHz, as he's a man of his own mind making :hihi:

Post

..which usually means free for all (aka im not going to bother with anything and just slack off another month)

:P

d'you hear that Teach? he's calling you out! :P

ahh well it looks like something to market in asia.

You can listen to a track I wrote with some japanese vocals if anyone wants too - i wrote it a couple of years ago - not too much thought went into it which I guess you will get if you can understand the vocals! If anyone can and wants to diss me for them please do!!!

Nice! It would be cool to have some really sweet, clear Japanese vocals over it, though. :)

I like music to spread love - not disrupt my bodilly parts
Don't you get Mythbusters on your TV?

actually i have seen myth busters! I enjoyed watching them try and make a man explode from gas build up in the toilet!

did they do a sonic tank thing?
Yup. They sweeped from 0 to 20000 at the highest SPL they could manage, with Adam in the middle of the speakers wearing a pair of heavy duty diapers.

No poo, but he had a big smile. :)

It's called "infrasonics" and they don't use a speaker. They use a mechanical diaphragm which operates in much the same way as a large air raid siren.

It can knock down a brick wall at 100 metres with it's fundamental resonant frequency.

On the other end of the scale, "ultrasonics" can cause intense headaches and enable us to see through human flesh and other soft substances having content that can be vibrated/modulated and can be used to determine the speed of a moving object like a car or baseball and how far away the 18th hole is......
