"Well, time to create something amazing."
[2 minutes of gorgeous playing later]
"Done! Let's get some coffee!"
I'm always astounded by your late 1960s/early 1970s jazz influences. A lot of your examples sound very Wagnerian and orchestral. Then you play a Rhodes patch, or some horns, and BAM! You've got Miles 1971 going on, or "The French Connection" soundtrack.
Semi-related: It took me about a year to track down the vinyl of this, between 1993 and 1994. When I finally found the vinyl, it was $5. I played the hell out of this song.

Thank's man, besides all the modern classical influence I got from my dad I also explored all that "other music" at an early age, Hancock, Corea, Miles became my heroes, so did Zappa, Santana, Genesis, ELO and whatnot. Although I don't play Jazz live anymore nowadays it's still in my vanes and after a long day in the studio the most relaxing thing I can think of is to noodle something live on tape

Well, "Rated X" was from the era where Miles' big influences were 1) Sly Stone and 2) your dad. Miles started playing trumpet less, and was playing a LOT of tone clusters on organ through a wah-wah pedal.Sampleconstruct wrote: Thank's man, besides all the modern classical influence I got from my dad I also explored all that "other music" at an early age, Hancock, Corea, Miles became my heroes, so did Zappa, Santana, Genesis, ELO and whatnot. Miles also had some amazing sidemen during this time, including Pete Cosey, who used a fuzz going into a Morley wah into a phase shifter to get a sound like a cat throwing up, if a cat throwing up was also an amazing virtuoso. About 20 years ago, my own guitar playing was highly influenced by Pete Cosey, except without the virtuoso part - just the cat barfing. Kinda like how Eno borrowed Fripp's guitar tone, and stripped away 99% of the notes.
Anyway, VintageVerb update: The first of the new reverb ideas I had a while back ended up not working out. It was supposed to spin around and through your head in random patterns, which it did - but not enough for my tastes. I realized that I will need a different architecture to get maxi spin, and this won't fit into my existing plugin paradigms. I have a few other possible reverb modes in mind, but these need to wait until I have updated the code for AAX compatibility, and THAT needs to wait for a few weeks until I have finished moving out of our old house into the new one. Sometime life intrudes upon DSP.

Moving house is always a major drag, but also a major excitement if the new house is better (still in Seattle?). Hopefully you have a nice laboratory for yourself in the new place, good luck!valhallasound wrote:

I have to admit that I never really "got" jazz or listened to any of it in my younger years. Okay, maybe a little Dave Brubeck or some Big Band, if that counts. I've always meant to check out more of Miles' work, and I'm really digging this one. What style is this? Would this be what they referred to as "broken beat"?valhallasound wrote:Semi-related: It took me about a year to track down the vinyl of this, between 1993 and 1994. I would call this type of music "1970s Miles Davis." There might be modern music styles inspired by this era, but I don't know of any other music from the 1970s that combined funk of this depth with the atonality that Miles was using. The 1971 album by Miles, "Live/Evil," sums things up perfectly, as this music was pretty spooky stuff at times. The albums I'd suggest:deastman wrote:I have to admit that I never really "got" jazz or listened to any of it in my younger years. Okay, maybe a little Dave Brubeck or some Big Band, if that counts. Thanks for understanding! Trust me, the LAST thing I want to do is be painting the walls of our dank old rental, but that's the sort of thing I have to do right now. Yesterday I went through all my junk from when I worked at Analog Devices. It is amazing how much obsolete hardware I had in that closet. Not cool obsolete, just out of date obsolete. On topic: Looking forward to VVV updates whenever you can get to them. Real life comes first!

Shifting house is the perfect time to cull unwanted junk.valhallasound wrote: Yesterday I went through all my junk from when I worked at Analog Devices. It is amazing how much obsolete hardware I had in that closet. Not cool obsolete, just out of date obsolete.

We shifted house twice in 6 weeks last year.
Lots of culling..... Make the most of the opportunity.
For funky, more mainstream Miles I love Tutu.
Awesome album, Marcus Miller and Miles.

Amandla is another good album full of Marcus Miller's compositions - as was music for Siesta.Beatworld wrote:For funky, more mainstream Miles I love Tutu.

He tweeted the other day that he's currently working on a new mode modelled very closely on a real hardware Lexicon 224 Concert Hall algorithm, and that it will be available soon.

224XL Concert Hall, to be precise.darkflame23 wrote:He tweeted the other day that he's currently working on a new mode modelled very closely on a real hardware Lexicon 224 Concert Hall algorithm, and that it will be available soon.
The new reverb mode is ready. I need to finish up the Pace Eden binary signing for AAX before I release this as a beta. I don't know how long this will take. Hopefully not forever. The actual plugin code has been updated to the latest Juce code, and the AAX target compiles without throwing any errors, which is good.

Great news Sean, can't wait!
Today I used a send to UberMod (with one of Den's Dimension D tweaked presets), into VVV (with one of Simon Stockhausen's tweaked presets), mixed it in with a whole ambient track at -24dB, and was just PERFECT!!!
