Sure, that's always an option. I don't really use my tone pot, though, in fact I've even turned it into a no-load pot (not a dramatic difference on a 500K pot) so having no tone should be fine for me. Another option is to change out that 3-way for a 5-way rotary.
- and about the plinky sound - this could well be the bridge, true.
My Jr (Badass) and Special (stop bar) are anything but not plinky 8) , should be easy to borrow a tailpiece from a Gibson and try that, you can always get a good compensated one or a Tone Pros later.
Now that you mention it, I've got a Wilkinson laying around that I can try. I'll report back shortly!

For all my well known penchant for budget guitars, I'm *hoping* to get a SG Standard in the near future after years of wanting one. It's by no means cut and dried as things stand but is looking more and more likely to happen.

After owning and regretting selling a stunning (m.i.m) 50's reissue tele some years back, I'm also drawn towards a Baja or maybe a Jim Root, but preference for a SG has just edged out in front atm.

A chalk'n'cheese choice I know, but still :hihi:

Sometime tomorrow I should hopefully be the proud owner of a brand new Gibson SG Standard :D

It's a guitar I've drooled over for years but could never really justify spending that amount of money on, I still can't tbh, but the pot of cash I'd been regularly topping up to pay for any emergency vet bills for my cats had grown enough for me to take the plunge.

I got it at a fantastic price, not a lot more than the price Thomann have it listed at (and theirs is really cheap) but this was from a UK shop with a good solid rep at CM Guitar forum and included a setup, something Thomann claim they do before dispatch on all guitars, but experience tells me otherwise.

Oh, in case anyone thinks I'll have no money for vet bills, there's still plenty left and the cats are insured, the money was there soley because I need to pay the vets upfront before sumitting a claim with Tesco pet insurance.

So sweet! We've still got the ESP Vipers here but they're more like Les Pauls with SG horns, given their size, weight, and sound.

It's some years since I last played a SG, I'm hoping my memory isn't playing tricks on how good it was.

A Jim Root is on the back burner, but alas, said burner may well have gone out never to be lit again.

Never played a ESP, nor to the best of my knowledge, ever seen one played live. It was finding a pic online of a Lincoln SG I used to own that got me hankering after the real thing, tho' the only thing they have in common is body shape. The Lincoln was thro' neck on a walnut (iirc) body and was just so comfortable to play.

SG's are a joy; they're light, their necks seem to go on forever, and they challenge you more than Les Paul's and PRS's. I like playing a Les Paul when I'm trying to show off, since it's so easy to play smoothly on one, but it's a lot more fun to play a guitar that requires a little effort. This probably isn't the experience you had with your Lincoln but I hope you enjoy it just the same.

Thanks Eric, I'm sure I will :D

The Lincoln was smaller than a regular SG in every respect and is the best guitar I've ever owned or played, so the incoming Gibson has a lot to match up to.

My SG arrived safe'n'sound this afternoon and it's sublime :D :D :D :D :D

The setup was perfect with only the top E needing tuning up half a tone, but that was it. Every guitar I've bought over the past 35+ years has needed an hour or so's tinkering about with after the initial playing, some needing the attention of my local guitar tech, but this was as near faultless as makes no difference.

So not a real green sg, that's cruel. I'm sure you'll find hours of joy in it.

If you mean green in the sense it was untouched from leaving Gibson, Mike, then yeah, it had been set up at the shop > Hartnoll Guitars > Torquay branch, UK.

For me, the most impressive thing was the way they tried to price match the Thomann price of £795 (+ delivery) With the new 20% UK VAT rate they couldn't but got down to £850, inc setup and delivery, which is a pretty good saving considering online list prices on other sites vary from £980 to over £1k.

I'd forgotten, if I ever knew tbh, just how hot these pups are, the output totally blows away that of my other humbuckered guitars  :D :tu: It might take me a while to get fully used to the body size and neck, but hopefully not that long.
