I more or less learnt synth programming with Thor (of Reason). That synth in it's default state was good, but to really get the awesome sounds out of it you had to go deeper. Thor gave all the opportunities for that, oh yes... I tend to look for synths like that. IMO it can get the sound beyond run of the mill patches. And let's not forget the happy accidents that can happen when you tweak away. To ME, that's inspiring and might actually evolve to a track idea in itself.

Once again very impressive Mathematics at least to my Cro-Magnon level brain but I keep waiting for Formulas to return results that push Dune into radically different sonic territory.cytospur wrote: Mon Dec 17, 2018 10:10 am

I'm glad formulas were added to D3 since some people have the skills and talents necessary to enjoy the feature and get something from it. All it's done for me is prove once again that my brain simply hates math. Something I was reminded of on a constant basis when in school.......

I don't have any experience with vowel effects, but to me the one in Dune 3 sounds incredible. When I opened the Confession KS preset (under Textures) I for a moment thought I was listening tot a choir sample (which is impossible of course).

syn·the·sis
/ˈsinTHəsəs/
noun
combination or composition, in particular.
the combination of ideas to form a theory or system.
I think this is just a result of trying to navigate this virtual world we have built. We are waste deep in virtual reality now. The gold fish doesn't know what moves the plant. You can no longer trust what you see, or hear, or feel. The hearts and minds of young folks being bought and sold like merchandise. Everyone having to take sides, either this or that. No middle ground left. How can you be honest when things like trust and honesty have been thrown to the waste land? I laughed out loud when a specific television show theme was lauded and praised as genius. It was some samples and a midi player, it was a karaoke song. Synthesizers used to be musical instruments. you made new musical sounds you could play. At some point synthesizers and samplers became merged. We no longer play the instrument, we program a facsimile. It would still be interesting if we actually still played it. "when people first hear techno, they are sucked in by the flash and instant gratification, the lights and the hype. eventually you get tired of the same drum rolls and flashy lights and look for deeper understanding." _ Rob Acid.
My final thought, If you don't want to play the thing, and you don't like playing WITH the thing, what did you buy a synthesizer for?

The maths aren't impressive really, although it does look quite horrific! The whole point of the idea, that that equation is an example of, is that it opens up DUNE3 (and D2 FTM) to a different type of synthesis, i.e. waveshaping which IMO is pushing DUNE2/3 in to radically different sonic territory.Teksonik wrote: Mon Dec 17, 2018 1:55 pmOnce again very impressive Mathematics at least to my Cro-Magnon level brain but I keep waiting for Formulas to return results that push Dune into radically different sonic territory.cytospur wrote: Mon Dec 17, 2018 10:10 am

But I'm still waiting for patches that support the fact that Formulas indeed push D3 into radically different sonic territory.cytospur wrote: Mon Dec 17, 2018 2:01 pm it opens up DUNE3 (and D2 FTM) to a different type of synthesis, i.e. waveshaping which IMO is pushing DUNE2/3 in to radically different sonic territory.
Formulas are well over my head but I'm still waiting for a modern day Archimedes to come up with something that makes me say "Wow, thank God we have Formulas now"......

Yes, it is seriously good. On par with the one in Lush101 which I used to think was the best sounding vowel filter ever.RichN wrote: Mon Dec 17, 2018 1:59 pm I don't have any experience with vowel effects, but to me the one in Dune 3 sounds incredible.

Just to point out that those waveshapers can be used as LFOs as well. If you use an LFO to modulate the position of the waveshaping wavetable, i.e. waveshape the input LFO, and use that wavetable to modulate something else then you can define your own LFOs in D2/D3. I'll try to find some time to knock up a patch for that.

Ok I'm open minded about the Formulas. I'd love to be shown that they indeed push D3 as much as say my request for the Zampler .sfz Osc in Dune.....

I must also say that the vowel filter FX sounds just really very good. You already could do vowel FX via modulating the filter cutoff at high resonance with another OSC but this little FX sounds superb.
Best vowel filter i heard yet in a synth.
The comb could be much better. But combining filters can add some new things as well.
Double filter section plus more flexible ways to chain them with the FX and with the (really GOOD) EQ you have so much more options to sculp sounds in Dune 3 compared to Dune 2.6.
It might not look like big difference at first look but damn it´s so much more really.
To the other nonsense and ego trips....i make some music and i like also to just create sound within synths and play them just for me. You also can do sound design and even foley with Dune 3 and whatever people can imagine which lives not in a pink bubble.
Cheers!

so I woke up and had to do it again and now I'm angry, angry because of a simple lack of respect. First and foremost for Richard, he starts a thread showcasing his new synth and some people turn this thread into their piss pot. Second, I have made requests in thgis thread and got completely disrespected by not stopping the attacks, bickering and the unnecessary off topic. Another mod did the same and I know that in fact three mods have tended to this thread removing posts.
It's only a few people but this is just so disrespectful on many levels

As an owner of Dune v2, would my money be better spent upgrading to Dune v3 or buying something else entirely, in particular thinking about Hive or Viper?
I think I'm asking if the added features really make so much difference? I d/l the demo, but I guess the very limited palette of presets available there make it difficult to compare to Dune v2, because they all use v3 features, so the comparison isn't really fair and simple. They sound great though, but so do Hive and Viper.
