Bottom line:-

Which has the phatter drum sound?

I really am not well versed in having to 'engineer' a drum sound like a producer would but I do want realistic sounding rock drums.

Am I being selfish by wanting the best of both worlds?

DKFH is a joke.

perhaps, DKFHS, or DKFHC&V

But the other toontrack products are total jokes.

Im also not altogether impressed with drumkit from hell superior, all in all. Havent tried my hand with custom and vintage though.

Cant speak for deluxe either, but it the original BFD samples are better than the first 2 drumkit from hell releases for sure.

I saw some comments about that BFD drums were too much ambience on, even when trying to make them dead dry.

If you want the dry Abbey Road studios drumbooth sound you should be able to get it.

But I also read that BFD later released another set to address this.

I have the DFH1 and is very pleased with these for my needs now, and the resources in computer they use up. To call them a joke, is just silly. They have 8 openlevels of open hihats, and a very clever way with mapped kits close miked and another room miked and you can mix to your liking.

We are talking DFH1 here, and they are just sample libraries, so you need a player for them too. Don't forget that.

But for future I will go with BFD for sure. I will also have a look at Imperial drums to be sure.

Before buying the more expensive products I usually have a few rounds(1 or 2) with mail contact to see how they deal with customers and so on. It's a good measurement how they later might deal with you if there are any problems.

FXpansion wins by a 100 to nil. And it shows in the products as well, as they are considered much more userfriendly than DFHS.

When buying software and accessories it usually means that you want to be able to upgrade many times during years to come and it's a long term relationship.

So check out demos that you can get from very dry drumbooth sound to more ambient to fit any mix you might have.

Jason can you explain why the other toontrack products are total jokes?

The original drumkit from hell was internationally acclaimed winning several awards. It was and remains a fantastic pioneering product, leading the way for things like bfd. If that's a joke then you have a very abstract sense of humour.

I own dfh1 and dfh superior...dfh 1 is not a joke and one of the best drum sample collections for the money, they run on many samplers and the velocity sensitve samples for the most part are well thought out.

However dfh superior lives up to it's name and is more on the level as BFD. I can not compare it to BFD as I haven't tried it. I would probably be interested now in BFD because of some additons that have been made....however having spent a lot on dfh superior it seems a bit of a waste of money for me.

dfh superior is very good sounding, and now it comes with some gm mappings (it was just updated last month) but I do not use the gm mapping.

It uses 35 gig of samples so if you can't store that forget about it, BFD is certainly going to be better then dfh1, all though dfh1 is very useful (but BFD is large too).

Fwiw, no songs on my site yet have dfh superior on them...but thisis something I'm working on now with it, I've posted it a couple times...for comparison The Whisper is dfh1

The interactive demo and tut found here is quit helpful in seeing how dfh superior works... :)

BFD Deluxe requires BFD, it's not a seperate product like DKFHS. I will say Deluxe does have the best and most detailed modern rock sounding drums I've heard out of a sample library. Very big tight sound, but also very flexible. In fact I much prefer it to the original BFD content which is extremely good as well, but Deluxe just works so much better for what I need it for with less tweaking. If money's not an issue pick up BFD+BFD DLX, if it is start out with BFD and move onto Deluxe at a later time. You won't be disappointed.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

Its a joke cause it sounds like crap. Period. Its weak and boring. Sterile. Was it the best of its time? Yes. but that doesnt mean it doesnt suck.

If you want BFD to sound deader, just use the new damping options.

8 levels of open hihats eh? oooooooooooooooo! ;)

Well, it does mean it doesn't suck. Sorry

Are there more extensive libraries today? Yes, but that does not mean everything else sucks. There are more than two colors on a palette.

And the more extensive libraries use up half a computer. This for just drums.

I am hoping for Arturia to come up with truly good physical modelling for drums as well. Not having to clutter down 20-30 GB of samples on every sample library you install.

I was in contact with Toontrack about openlevels on hihats, and they said 4 on DFH1 and 3 on DFHS. They don't even know their own product it seems.

I found 8 openlevels with each multisampled in DFH1.

Meshugga is doing mostly doublekicks anyway, and is not using left foot for so much expressive hihats what I heard.

I did some experiments when I made a GM set for Vsampler of DFH 1, which I clutter threads with every now and then

Its a joke cause it sounds like crap. Period. Its weak and boring.
Try to mix the sounds (as this is what they are.. raw recorded drumkit samples) and then try to say that it sounds weak.

Many people tend to listen to this libraries as
"what you hear is what you get" and then when they
put this into a song and moan about weak sound you
wonder if they ever were involved in a recording with real drums before......

Boost the bassdrum around 60-80hz, add abit
snap in the snare by yada yada and so on and
you´ll get such a fat sound that you´ll drip in
lard.
