Hip-Hop: BEST drum samples?

I know that there is the obvious TR-808 samples, but other than those what is generally used for modern hiphop? I understand that there is a large variety of sounds being used out there, but what should I be looking for in terms of "staple" drum-samples?

I'm working on a project with a good friend of mine (will be posting a track up here soon for review), and we use a lot of the 808 samples to drive our drums, but from my listening experience there seems to be something we're missing (mainly on the kick drum).

What's a good sample set for those low booming kicks that I hear in a lot of the lil jon tracks? Also, what is primarily being used for bass?

Any help is greatly appreciated, any input that can send me on the right track (no pun intended ) would be great!

Most acoustic hip hop samples are taken from old soul/funk/rnb/jazz/blues tracks, from the 70's and before.

Kicks drums are most often layered. Even with an acoustic kick, if you pitch it down and compress it enough it can have the sustained 'boom' that resembles the body of an 808. Try to do this and layer it with a regular acoustic drum kick, mixing and matching until you have the characteristics you're after (or layer it with an 808). If it's not worth the effort, there's always the lil jon sample pack.

Thanks for the info, I've been doing just that...I just posted this in case there was something out there that's standard for the genre (besides 808's of course).

Anything notable to the dirty south genre is what I'm looking for, good to know that I'm on the right path.

I can't say what's best, since I don't really buy a lot of samplesets, but have a look at the Goldbaby samples. Cheap, they sound fantastic and would be excellent for hiphop.

There's a great video floating around with Timbaland and Kanye West that might give you some inspiration on what you want for the kick. There's a great distorted kick in there that I'm guessing is the kind of thing you're after. Have a look, fun if you like studio videos:

Have a look at all the classic drum machines. The 808 is the most popular but not the only one in use.

Also: processed acoustic drums. Compress, eq, and pitch down (or up) the snares. Lowpass, compress and eq the kicks. And shorten the envelopes on both. Then lay 808 (or other) claps/booms on top.

for the light hearted side of hip hop (and much more besides) with real drums i don't think you can go wrong with the "smokers delight" stuff.

That Sonic Charge MicroTonic should allow you to create those synthesized Lil Jon type bass kicks. Various types of kicks and percussion sounds for that matter.

Well really what I'm looking for is something modern. I just can't seem to find the "Vengeance" equivelent of hip hop.

Most of my TR808's and TR909's sound like shit. Is there anything decent out there? Some samples without annoying hiss, and not cut before the kick's decay finishes?
