I just ordered the Studio Drums Capsule. I guess I am a little impatient ;) I am wondering how good the velocity layers are? And do I have to do anything to set it up right in sampltank 2?
I am doing a rock CD and getting what I want out of the drummers I have available (which aren't many) is proving impossible :( I am hoping to be able to use this to get some realistic sounding tracks with a minimal amount of hair loss :D

I have not yet gotten the sounds only upgrade for ST2, but based on ST1XL, the drums are the weak point for sure :( although the rest of the stuff sounds pretty killer! are there any other drum CDs I should look at? I see 2 others on esounds. Interactive drum kits and snares, and acoustic drums for sample tank. Are these useful? and are they diverse enough to warrant the purchase? I guess I don't want a bunch of drum CDs with the same samples on them ;)
Thanks!
Have a great day!

Studio Drums Capsule is the most extensive drum programming ever done in ST2 next to Studiophonik which is coming out later this year. Those are the two I recommend the most for dynamics. Acoustic Drums Expansion Tank is also very good sounding but has an average dynamics of 2-3 levels as opposed to 4-8 like the other two I just mentioned.

The best kits in ST2 that you can make are the individual multi-dynamic programs layered into combi patches in ST2. You can then easily swap out a snare for another within a kit and also process them individually or run them through separate outs. It's a good way to work with drums although it can take up most of your instance (a good reason to upgrade to the full version for more instances than the LE version that comes with the capsules).

I think you'll be impressed with how realistic the Studio Drums Capsule (and all of the capsules) can be. Of course that also depends on how you play it too.

Thanks Squids!
I haven't gotten too deep into the working of ST2 yet. I guess I am one of these guys who likes to turn it on and get to work ;) I'm sure I'll have some questions when I get the studio drum capsule in!
Glad you guys didn't blow away this weekend!!
Have a great day!

How is this done? I have not figured out this aspect of ST2 yet. I would like to swap some the snares out of the ILILEIT kit for some less strident snare hits. I would also like to tune the snares a bit lower since they always sound too high. CAn you explain how to do that for just one note.

Thanks,
Gordon

Gordon,

Swapping snares: (If the zone mapping of both drum kits are identical, e.g. both GM or both I-Map)
  • - Load the ILILEIT-kit in e.g. Part 10 (MIDI channel = CH.10).
    - Load the kit with the new snares in e.g. Part 11 and set CH to the same MIDI channel as Part 10 (MIDI channel = CH.10).
    - Switch "Zone" to "On"
    - In Part 10 select a snare zone you wish to replace and reduce that zone-level to a minimum.
    - Repeat this for all the zones you wish to replace.
    - In Part 11 reduce ALL the zone-levels to minimum except the zones which will replace those in Part 10.
    - This trick will gobble up 2 of the 16 MIDI parts...
    - If you save both parts as a "USER PRESET" setup, then you can re-use this in a future compilation.

The answer to all of the questions above is: SR Studio Drums Capsule is the best music-related purchase I've made in a very long time (I'm trying to think of anything else, short of my Rode NT-1, that offered the most enchancement to my music for the least amount of money). Combine it with some MIDI drum tracks from GrooveMonkee.com (the best out there) and you'll never even think about BFD ever again. The SR Studio Drums Capsule programs for ST2 are *amazing* (I particularly liked the multiple programs per kit). I have yet to play with assigning the various drums to individual tracks but I'll probably try that this weekend because it sounds pretty darned cool.

The only "downside" is that based on the strength of the Studio Drums Capsule, I pretty much have to buy StudioPhonik now, and I hadn't really budgeted that in ;)

Thanks asseca! I will print this and go step by step since just reading the procedure has me very confused.

Gordan,
I would also like to tune the snares a bit lower since they always sound too high.
- Switch "Zone" to "On"
- Select the "Zone" (snare note) you wish to modify
- In ST2-LE use "PITCH" and "FINE TUNE"
- In ST2-LE you can also experiment with "CUTOFF" and "RESONANCE"
- remember to save your setting in a PRESET
- TIP: it is wise to save via your host as a FXB

Thanks asseca!

I'm using ST2 XL. Selecting a note to tume in zone mode, which Synth setting should I use? Resample PS/TS or stretch?

Post

Gordon,

For drums I am not sure, I suspect PS should be OK...

Post

Use resample engine for percussive instruments.

Good help asseca! Nice to see how into it you are. I will check out the thing from your other thread a bit later on. I know that the information is saved in ST2 XL with the child presets. It should be for the combis as well but now I want to check to be double sure. Then I will see if it is supposed to be in the LE version as well.

Hey Squids! Glad to see your OK!

Kind of embarassed I don't know this stuff after playing with ST2 for so long - shows that I don't do much outside the presets, eh?

Cheers,
Gordon

Well I got it! Haven't had a whole lot of time to fool with it, but for what time I did, I am pretty happy! I think I can get some bangin' track with it ;)
Have a great day!
