Hey,
Is Captain Chords by Mixed In Key worth it if I need chord progression generator or do you recommend any better alternatives?

Post

You might also want to check out Scaler 2

It depends what you are after...

The great stuff about Captain plugins is that there are multiple for different tasks synced to the Captain Chords plugin...

Even if just for Chords there are more advanced plugins out there (as the suggested Scaler) Captain Chords is quite capable and yet easy to use... especially compared to it´s advanced competition...

But where they really shine is in combination and because of that they are (to my knowledge) just available as the whole collection...

Captain Beat is a very nice plugin for getting nice drum beats with tons of included drum kits and premade patterns for multiple genres...

Captain Chords we already spoke about is basically the "Master" for the following ones:

- Captain Deep creates automatic basslines matching the chord structure from Captain Chords
- Captain Melody creates Melody lines depending on the Chords from Captain Chords with a nice
"idea" generator which can be set up very flexible and creates really good results
- Captain Play syncs to the key of Captain Chords and let you play chords or single notes which are always in key to the rest of the plugins that you can live "jamming" along with what the other plugins are doing...

What I like about them is that everything is layed out in an easy to grab way in a PR editor which is editable for Captain Chords and Melody (I am sure Captain Deep will get this too sooner or later)...

For this complete bundle you get there isn´t really a competition which is as easy useable but still so capable...

As already said there are more advanced competitors but either just for a limited task or so complicated that it´s easier to study quantum physics...

The only other I personally took into consideration (and have bought) is the stuff from Hauke Menges´Feel your sound...
Sundog is very interesting and powerful too (but just stand alone app while very easy to setup with a DAW)

It's useful.
You might want to wait for a sale price though.
If you have a new mac M1 chipset, then it's currently useless without using Rosetta, until their update is complete.
You can also try Splash Pro. It's free, and it's amazing. Adjusting the settings gives diverse results.

What worries me a bit is that Captain Plugins 6 was announced for december 2021 and stil no beta out, nothing

Not that version 5 is not nice and useable but as there is so much going on that its really hard to find out whats actually "best" (of course depends on individually needs). I have to say that apart from already existing ones for me Instacomposer really comes near and is even easier to use cause evrything in ONE plugin and with 7 different possible tracks.

So would be really interesting why CP 6 is so much delayed and if there will be anything "revolutionary" in it.....

I have the bundle since a while now, I'll rate the plugins like that:
- Chords: Really good, I start my chord progressions with that now.

- Bass: Kind of meh, it works for simple basslines but you always have to export the midi afterwards to tweak it

- Melody: The algorithm to generate melodies just doesn't do it for me. The results are always strange and unusable, no matter what I do. I use it to write melodies by hand though, because I instantly see in what relation to the chord a note is. That's helpfull for me.

- Beat: Great tool, but I have just too many tools that will generate drum patterns for me. I cycle through those, though, so it get's use.

Overall, I bought the whole bundle second hand at a good price point. I think it's worth the money and I would buy it again.

There is actually a closed beta going on right now where they invited people who already own the plugins to test the new ones. Very good improvements, Captain Bass is actually quite good now, but they are improving their existing product and not make a totally new one.

I don't see an upgrade path from v5 to v6.
Mixed in Key doesn't seem to have any login account thing, so how can one get the upgrade price?

edit: I just found the small print at the lower part of the purchase page to upgrade.

Go to the shop ("Buy now"). Below the price list is a link: Upgrade from an old version. You enter your account email and you get an offer.

Wonder about your experience. For me its buggy as hell and really not useable at all cause the state of the chord plugin is not saved with project (a lot of other bugs but thats the one really no go), so you have to start again evrytime. Mixcraft is not officially supported but I had all the version before and never any problem :-(

Post

Wonder about your system, then. ;-) Mac, 10.14.6, Live 11.1. Chords Epic and Deep Epic saved with project with no problems.

I didn’t know that my purchase at the end of 2021 entitled me to a free upgrade to Epic. I bought at 29$ the upgrade, but I reach out to them and they refunded me.
