What's a good free or cheap VST that works kind of like a groovebox in the following ways?
--You can program in different beats and with a click/keypunch switch from one to another
--Given a complete beat (i.e. several drums playing several bars) yu can play just one instrument within that beat, and with a click/keypunch add in the other instruments one at a time (or take them out).

Air Music's Strike 2 (cheap when on sale or bundled, but with a pretty dated GUI) can do lots of interesting variations. It has key switches for different rhythms, and each strike in the sequencer also has a user-defined threshold for triggering, based on the position of the mod and pitch wheels. It's the easiest way I've found to get a dynamic feeling from pre-programmed sequences. If it could send MIDI out for triggering other drum machines in real time, it would be the only drum sequencer I'd use.

Singlecell's Caustic does all of those. It's more of an Android app, but there is a Windows version of it that is fully functional.
You may also want to try Argonaut Atlas. I've never used it, but there is video on YouTube and it looks like it might do those things too.
