A few of us were discussing ways to work around Logic's lack of good options for MIDI output from AU instruments.

I found an easy way to work around this. The answer is kind of hilarious - basically you circumvent all Logic MIDI routing by loading a container plugin that can route MIDI directly. In my case, I used Kushview Element.

Basically, you just make any kind of track (I made it an External Instrument but others should work too.) Then you add your container plugin as a MIDI effect. Then you load the instrument you want to output MIDI in the container as a VSTi (*not* as an AU) just build the MIDI routing in the container.

Here's an example routing Pigments MIDI out to my external Kobol Expander:

Logic really needs to add native support for AU instruments to output MIDI. But until they do, this works.
