Armed with mouse and keyboard and only remembering a father-son
relationship and a relay race, several years ago i managed to
find out the title of a movie whose instrumental track i liked.
Unfortunately, the track wasn't listed in the soundtrack and
it seems that it still isn't.

The track is played during the race.

Could someone with seven ears and about fourteen noses
track some... track info down?

This should be on the credits roll, shown at the end of the movie. Not crediting a used song is a severe offense in the movies business. Is it available for streaming? Can you rent it on DVD? Buy it on DVD?

Even though you definitely remember it, better check the movie itself. Either you found back the wrong movie, or they did not credit a song, or the reputable internet pages at both imdb and wikipedia lack this tiny piece of pages. Someone thought it was irrelevant, and then one copies the other, and "alternative facts" became truth.

I see that there are several short clips on YT with the recordings of the TV screen. One of them shows the end titles and in one of them you can listen to the music, so movie and song seem to match.

I didn't look at the end titles with attention (the camera is not perpendicular to the TV screen), but it seemed to me that the song titles were only the ones also listed in the soundtrack. Also, in a video comment section, there are people asking for that music title.

When i decided to check again (a few weeks ago) i took a look at the music produced by Miles Goodman and Shelly Manne as reported here:
