A brand new developer just launched their first instrument Gyro. They are former NI employees ..and the thing is pretty much like Playbox.

I personally think Playbox was one of the few brightest moments in the downfall of NI product line. Saddened to see that they didn't expand it any further, so UVI did with their Mosaiq. I have a soft spot for these kind of songstarter/inspiration boxes, I got the Pro version and I'll be the guinea pig, so you don't have to (unless you want to).

In case you have no idea what Playbox does, in a nutshell it has 4 parallel sample players with a selection of pre-made chord progressions, where individual chords can be triggered from your controller's white keys. That's nothing special per se, but the thing can randomize nearly everything and that's the whole idea of it. To come up quickly with some unique sequences, as every note of the chord can be a different sample (they can be same too). UVI took this a little further with arpeggiator and phraser that can be randomized too.

So, Gyro has 4 sample players too, plus additional "drone" layer with some static sound.

Pros
+ The main page is very well designed, all the 4 sound players have their most important controls there when you hover mouse over one. Plus you can randomize or load the individual preset for any of the main controls: pattern, chord, sound and fx without entering any of their own sub-page.
+ 14 chord slots (8 on Playbox and Mosaiq), chords can be copy/pasted and individual notes can be edited easily
+ Chord progression export/import via midi files (in Mosaiq you'll need to "learn" every chord slot)
+ 4 separate patterns for each sample player, all can be randomized at once or per pattern
+ The patterns can be randomized pretty nicely with several starting points (arpeggiator, hook, splatter, bass or "auto")
+ "Half-time" FX is done via sends, also the reverb and delay can be sent, interesting result from those
+ Pretty solid modulation options, easily assignable via right-click menu (1 dedicated LFO per sample player, plus global modulators)
+ Samplers can be (optionally) played "chromatically" via midi channels 1-4, without triggering the chords (Playbox can't do this)
+ Controls are exposed to DAW automation
+ License transferrable. :)

Cons
- No demo, you'll need to pay 10€ for the player version (which is pretty limited but you'll get the idea of how it works)
- No intro price, 149€ is pretty steep for a new product from a new developer
- No refund if you have activated the license (so pretty much useless)
- Stability is solid for a version 1.0.0 release
- Loading global preset loads all the submodules too, no locking of pattern/chord/sound/fx (as of now)
- Whichever submodule preset you load, there is a small pause involved every time
- No sample import as of now, but promised in a future update (we'll see)
- No midi out (Playbox can output them because Kontakt has the feature, Mosaiq can't either)
- FX are pretty good, but pretty basic selection (Playbox has Kontakt's granular engine, like UVI's Mosaiq has their own built-in FX from other products)
- Uses more CPU than the competition, even if the slick UI visuals are rendered on the GPU (hopefully will be optimized in the future)
- No scale lock (just major/minor on both Playbox and Mosaiq, yet still lockable)

Update v1.1 from yesterday fixes most of the features I was missing!

* User Samples - Load your own samples into one or more layers to expand Gyro
with your own sonic character. (only available in PRO)
* MIDI Out - Route each sequencer lane to its own MIDI channel to drive other
plug-ins or external hardware directly from Gyro.
* MIDI Out Channel Filter - For DAWs that can't receive multi-channel MIDI
from plug-ins, you can limit MIDI Out to a single sequencer lane/channel.
* Chord / Pattern Locks - Lock your Patterns and/or Chords while browsing
main presets, so you can keep the groove or harmonic idea steady while
exploring new sounds.
* New Sound Sources

I bought the play version yesterday and despite the restrictions have a lot of fun playing round with it

And today really a surprise: midi out works in the play version :tu:

As I am on the same trip loving these playthings like playbox, modalics (and I would ad the new notes to it) trying the play version was inevitable :ud:

I have to say in case of instant useability and general concept this is really two steps further in devellopment compared to the other ones (they all have parts that simply dont have been thought and develloped from the user point and so the workflow gets interrupted on one point or the other).

Only con I see for myself so far is the high price and as you said without intro or anything (and I doubt there will be any sales soon).

If "play" means there will be some expansions out for this version I might as well stay with the play version cause midi out, chord lock evrything most needed for me is working and as just a play thing to noodle round with it....

Hi everyone, thanks a lot for the thoughtful feedback in this thread.

We dropped Gyro 1.1 last night and it’s been great to see the first reactions coming in.

Gyro 1.1 is officially out now (free update). It adds three big items that came up a lot from our users (including in this thread):
• User Samples (Pro) - Load your own samples into one or more layers. This turns Gyro into a creative sampler.
• MIDI Out - Use Gyro as a real-time melodic MIDI generator to drive other instruments or hardware.
• Pattern + Chord Locks - Keep a groove or harmonic idea stable while browsing presets.

MIDI Out has a lot of potential, and we made sure it’s available in Play as well. Play was always designed as a real product, not a demo. The goal was to offer a ton of Gyro’s core value for 10 bucks and keep it accessible. For some people, Play might be all they need. If you want more, you can upgrade to Pro anytime.

Thanks again for your feedback and for checking Gyro out.

Happy to see you joined in so questions could be asked directly.

What I would like to know for now: am I right with my assumption that their might be expansions coming up for the play version (name and same concept from other devellopers let me come to this suggestion) ?

As yesterday and today where kind of late christmas with great new stuff coming out I noodled round with it and made a short kind of "new toys sketch" :ud:

Sadly as kvr only allows 2 MB upload the quality is lousy but I hope you get the intention.

Midi is all from Gyro Play version on 6 tracks, chords locked. One with original Gyro sounds, one new beautiful new kontakt library Materia Prima from yesterday and the rest is the wonderful new Unify 2 library Guitarsphere from today.

EDIT: worked a little bit simply on editing the sequence of the patterns on the different tracks and a little mastering, then exchanged the mp3

Next steps would be to play around with different pattern settings evolving over time on the tracks but thats a "snapshot" from today, hope it might be helpful to get an impression of Gyro.

I took a shot on the play version and it's fun to mess around with.. I'm echoing somebody else's comments on the need for an undo/redo; the randomization is nice and broad but one accidental button press and you can't recover

I like how Omnisphere 3 is doing their undo/redo (more like versioning) approach, file based and you can see a history of each step. Granted it's way more work to implement that!

1.1 has been a nice addition and of course I want more :)

Just some nice-to-have management kind of things:
1) Multi-outs for the 4 sounds
2) Ability to change location of data folder

Post

Can this be available for Linux Users at anytime in the future?

Whoa 5GB install, that leaves me out. phew... don't need the extra expense...

Next request unless I'm missing it: an init patch please

Initialization is available in every preset browser: Main Presets, Sound Set Presets, Single Sound Presets, Chord Presets, and more.

Open the three-dot menu in any browser and select Initialize.

One basic request I came on yesterday when trying to add some sequencers/arps whatever behind the midi out:

- setting the root note and scale for the chord progression, could be opional if you want to have the option for chord progressions without borders but definitely needed as an option

Post

Hi 10k guys, tried your play version today, and it's really a great tool... Here are some suggestions to improve for 1.2:
- import chords via drag'n'drop (maybe it's possible - we can't try without a trial)
- scale/root lock
- pattern speed/lenght/grid independent for all 4 lanes

And here's the extra gimmick for imported chords: I know there's a difference about how the chords are played (order). Could be cool to have a dice to randomise the order of the notes for a chord :-)
