Spectral Smearing like Serum 2 Bode's Blur?

Hello! I am working on a plugin with some internal creative effects to affect the sound before the main processing begins. I am taking inspiration from plugins like Serum that have a lot of creative filters and phasers/flangers. I'd like to add a Blur control, similar to the one found in Serum 2's Bode effect or in Echobode by Sonic Charge. I have to guess that this Blur effect is similar but distinct from a short reverb, and likely uses allpass filters, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding a source for designing something like that. What is the most likely approach for designing a blurring filter like the ones listed?

Take a look at diffusion networks in reverbs, Signalsmith has a great article

I'll have to read through this. I was really hoping that the specific blur effect was already a known algorithm, as I don't really trust myself to create that kind of effect with such little experience, but maybe I'll be able to get something nice from this article.

Just found it a little weird that the only plugins I'd seen this smear control on were related to frequency shifters, thought maybe there was some correlation there.

SpecOps has a Smear parameter (not sure how well it compares to Serum's) and some other parameters that might help blur.
Bin Scrambler seems to work: https://www.andrewreeman.com/spectralsuite/
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

This is exactly what I needed! The Diffusion section really explained it well, and stacking Schroeder allpasses with randomized times did the trick. Thanks for the recommendation!

I know exactly what you're talking about, but that's not quite the effect I was looking for. It was hard for me to specify a time-based smearing, like Bode, from a frequency-based smearing, like SpecOps (which Serum also has in its spectral oscillator i believe). Turns out Diffusion is what I needed.

How does that turn into the echobode sound? is it a filter plus a diffuser?

The allpass filters discussed above are just for the "smearing" or "blur" effect. Main part of Echobode is a delay line with a Bode frequency shifter.
