i've tried a lot of different synths, both stock (from multiple daws) and vst, and nothing sounds quite like this, if anyone here has been around since late 2000s-early 2010s and recognize this synth please tell me what it is. my assumption is that it could be refx vanguard, but i'm not 100% sure on that

I'm pretty sure I can make almost all the sounds on just a simple Synth1 vst (or any other for that matter)
When you're new to sound design you overthink how complex things might be.
most sounds are quite simple in and of themselves.
Blending sounds and playing chords and a few modulations might mage it seem difficult but the individual sounds are not

i'm not new to sound design... i also thought that there's nothing difficult to recreate, but i can't even get the right bass tone... it seems like there are some interesting waveforms, not just regular saws (for example, the bass sounds very similar to bi-saw in vanguard, but not 1:1 match)

Yes you are correct
As you said the core is right but it sounds like some guitar crunch is added to the sound.
But you can do that in post
It 90 percent there now.
I'm not great with guitar processing but the effect isn't that strong so mixing in some typical guitar rig or amplitude will get you very close
If you want to make a full remake or a few of the sounds, let me know.
Especially if you would create the midi for a lead or chords so I know exactly what you're after.
