MIDI plugins and the Steinberg SDK

Hi,

I've got the general impression that there are issues with developing MIDI-only plugins with the raw Steinberg SDK, but I'm not clear on whether they are merely inconveniences (that require a bit of additional coding to address) or fundamental obstacles (that really require buying into to a whole additional framework such as JUCE).

Can anyone kindly ELI5 the issues?
