sonicLAB has released PolyNodes, a spatial sonic sculptor, their approach to generative sound synthesis. Here's what they say:
PolyNodes combines an architectural approach to sound design with multi-scale sound composition, transforming traditional two-dimensional waveforms into a dynamic 3D spatial navigation experience.
It extracts and analyzes the temporal properties of input sound, mapping them into a 3D space to create a visible geometric structure.
Key sound moments are identified as geodesic points or nodes, interconnected through triangulations, resulting in a complex multi-scale sonic navigation. Each sound material generates a unique 3D geometric entity based on macro, meso, and micro-level onset time analysis, with thousands of node connections possible.
PolyNodes features multiple playheads, known as node agents, equipped with various re-synthesis and signal processing techniques.
It offers multiple navigation strategies for agents at different levels, introducing DSP interactables for direct interaction with the 3D geometry. Proximity to these interactables determines their influence, integrating spatial interaction into sound design.
CuboidFX utilizes 3D spatial manifestation of cuboid objects with continuously varying dimensions to extract real-time modulation data, creating dynamic interactions with the PolyNodes geometry.
The iso-morph feature allows the geometric entity to morph while preserving time/distance relationships, enabling real-time modulation of synthesis parameters.
A full set of stochastic modulators well known to sonicLAB further enhances modulation capabilities.
Built with a pure 64-bit architecture and 100% custom DSP code, PolyNodes includes crafted presets by Laurent Mialon and Daito Manabe.
It comes with the PolyNodesRemote plugin for DAW integration, offering automation scoring, tempo sync, and hardware controller assignment.
PolyNodes is a standalone application, PolyNodes Remote is a VST3/AU plugin. The bundle is available for macOS and Windows.
