According to the manual Spectral can't produce noise in the oscillators. Interesting...
I think operation would drive me crazy with all those tabs

I'm not the most qualified to verify this, but within the plugins I have, Spectral is a really intelligent synth with pretty precise control, for example where the effects are routed, but especially with how each osc gets it's own filter and envelope. Even Predator is rather limited (extremely) when it comes to each osc getting an envelope and filter. I haven't gotten into a 1/4 of what Spectral can do, but what I've been finding appears to be an endless foray into manipulation. Of course, this can be solved with multiple instances running, but having an arp for each osc would have made the challenge of programming all in one instance fun - like in Albino.fluffy_little_something wrote:When you read the specs of Spectral, no wonder they gave up. It is so complete, there is nothing meaningful they could add.

At least the demo version does!

The reason why there is no noise source in Spectral is explained here by Peter himself:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5586292
And you can fake noises using subtly the waveforms of the oscillators. It won't be real noise but it will be beautiful fakes to add to the other sounds in an evolving envelope for example, with awesome results. This tip is quite often used by Simon Stockhausen (Patchpool) in his two preset banks for Spectral, especially in the Ambient atmospheres and cinematic categories, presets which can be used directly of course... but also to learn in depth how to produce one's own sounds with a lot of original results. incidentally it is the main reason why I buy "pre-made" presets for my synths.

This review from Jono Buchanan is short but excellent, very appealing:

I already have more than enough synths for my present purposes, but I'm struggling with whether to purchase SaxLab. It has a broad range and, although it has its sonic quirks and shortcomings, at $49 it seems to be a good deal for some in-the-mix sax. But I am worried about what will happen when I next update my Mac; that's really the main thing holding me back.

I'm confused about MorphoX. In the settings of the demo version it allows you to change the mapping of the mod wheel and aftertouch, but is it true that this doesn't effect the Morph control? If so... stupid... or is it a limit of the demo?
To anyone with M4L, it's no big thing to be able to route different MIDI controls to the Morph-wheel parameter. I have it running with aftertouch right not. Makes a big difference when playing two handed pads. Expression pedal would even be better because you could park it... but my M4L device doesn't do that... maybe I could change that.

Multiple carrier FM is quite good for brass -- add in FX, and you can get nice results, especially for layering with samples.BlackWinny wrote:Ingo, you who are a specialist in the brass sounds, how do you compare it to other tools (vintage or not) in that type of sounds?
Here are two short .wav files of a patch I made, one with chords, the other solo. This is 100% Spectral, FX included:

Very nice ! I imagine the result in unison slightly spread...KBSoundSmith wrote:Multiple carrier FM is quite good for brass -- add in FX, and you can get nice results, especially for layering with samples.BlackWinny wrote:Ingo, you who are a specialist in the brass sounds, how do you compare it to other tools (vintage or not) in that type of sounds?

They are trumpet like. Did you try to make something recalling a clarinet and something recalling an oboe?

Since you mentioned it, I took a stab at making an oboe, although I haven't tried a clarinet yet.BlackWinny wrote:Very nice ! Here's a .wav of the oboe, again 100% Spectrum:

Compare that to 5:43 in this video:

It isn't too bad, volume automation would get it closer -- there is a sibilant frequency in there too that could use fixing too.
EDIT: like the brass patch, this used multiple carrier FM with a custom oscillator for the modulator.
