About overlapping... I think I have too many patches in my plugin set, and I must admit I did not take the time to really explore (and maybe edit) all of them, so, I hear a lot of "overlapping stuff" around in any case.
The best way to avoid overlapping, IMO, is to design patches by myself.
I like Alchemy, Kontakt, Iris, Padshop Pro, Absynth, but it's not really a matter of "what" gear to use anymore (all of them are very advanced in terms of features and sound quality), yet it's about "how" to use them.
I unregulalry study the manuals, then I totally do whatever comes in my mind, maybe lots of so called mistakes... if I like the sound, then it's right anyway.
