There's GTG's ST2008, BK SynthLab's Intro and VS-1 which I love very much.

Also Synth1, Arguru's Voyager and basically any HG-Fortune synth.

Any other recommendations in this region?

Like if I would make something that sounds a lot like late 80s early 90s rave music, what freeware plugins (instruments and effects) should I use other than those I've mentioned above?

if you can put up with the annoying nag screen, Asynth is a free gem with 3 modeled filter types that sound really snappy.

yeah, its one of my faves in my brushed metal collection. i found the dev's facebook and sent him messages to try to get the un-nag version, but they all went ignored

bummer, because i do like the filters on this little simple synth.
