Welcome to the 86th One Synth Challenge! It's a friendly music competition where you can win cool prizes but most importantly, meet amazing musicians, and learn a lot about mixing, sound design, and more! :)

Fresh OSC Community Resources to get you started:
* Have patches? Post them and we'll put the link here! Unbelievable. Extraordinary. Divine. Those are words I would describe this peculiar aural, barely laden beast. Yet strange, but simple. It is some kind of waveshape / delay matrix synth. Hopefully will be an interesting challenge.

Want to try out your skills in other contests / competitions /challenges?
  • Indaba - Has a mix of popular and indie artists with various contests like remixing and song writing. Some people from OSC have had success here.
  • KVR Mix Challenge (see stickies) - Who can mix a song the best (Without adding extra recordings /musical additions)? Each person starts out with the same stems.
  • Music Cafe (KVR, see stickies) - A thematic monthly competition. Use recording, real instruments, synths and samples.
  • RemixComps - An aggregator for remix contests from a variety of artists and genres (mostly EDM) - indie and popular.
  • Soundevotion (SDCOMPO) Competition - Even longer running than the OSC, the SDCOMPO is even more niche in that you must use a tracker, and set of specific effects. Great community.
  • DiHalt Demoscene competitions

Yep, this will be an interesting month.

Might give this a go, not done one before.

I'm a little scared of this one to be quite honest XD Should be pretty fun though.

Hey, quick question: Under what circumstances would one be able to use Glitchmachine's Fracture and/or Hysteresis? One's a buffer effect, the other a "glitch delay", but both can destroy a sound pretty badly if you fiddle enough, and I think that's a no-no if I understood the rules right. So can I just flat out not use them, or could I use it if in moderation? Thanks to whomever decides to answer.

Don't use them. :tu:

I can't believe how long it has been since I've done one of these. I've started a couple, but didn't finish. This one though is so tempting, I am going to give it a real shot. Wish me luck.
This space has been unintentionally left blank.

Yes, I'm looking forward to the entries too, I'm curious of what kind of drums the OSCers can make with Sinnah , so far I have just some kind of tabla percussion and a kick. I don't come close to a nice snare sound. Anyway I wasn't planning to enter this month, maybe that's the reason why I don't try harder and explore more the synth.

For any penguins here : got it running (32 bit) under Linux.
OS Linux Mint 17.3 with KX Studio repos (http://kxstudio.linuxaudio.org/Repositories)

Short version:

winetricks to install gdiplus.dll
Airwave Vst bridge (https://github.com/phantom-code/airwave ... /tag/1.3.2)
note : I have a 64bit wine install but 32 bit plugins are automagicly bridged :hail:

Long version:

At first the gui was all black with only elements lighting up on mouse over.
Then I remembered something about gdiplus.dll, did some googling and found this
https://www.reddit.com/r/Reaper/comment ... _in_linux/

On that page this did the trick:

Code: Select all

winetricks -q vcrun2010 mfc42 gdiplus
So fired up Reaper which is most of the time the best bet to run windows plugins on linux, alas the 64 bit plugin didn't load, but the 32 version did. :?
Started carla (http://kxstudio.linuxaudio.org/Applications:Carla), neither 64 or 32 bit would load ...
Started carla-single from the commandline (this is linux):

Code: Select all

carla-single win64 vst Sinnah_x64.dll
and noticed this

Code: Select all

err:module:import_dll Library gdiplus.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\VstPlugins\\Sinnah\\Sinnah_x64.dll") not found
:dog:

Tried

Code: Select all

carla-single win32 vst Sinna.dll
and the 32 bit version worked .. :wheee:

Ok, started Ardour4.7,create midi track, load carla-rack as plugin. From carla-rack load Sinnah 32bit. Freeze , crash and burn :bang:

 But there's another option to run windows plugin in linux called Airwave.https://github.com/phantom-code/airwave ... /tag/1.3.2
For a long time this wouldn't work with Ardour but recently this got fixed, and so I gave it a try and it works .. :hyper:

Why linux ? JFK explained this best
We choose to go to the moon RUN LINUX in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.

Only way I could get some sorta kick was with pitchbend.

WOW :o :o

Thanks

Yeah, this one is a weird one!
I'm so sad I missed the last one, because Xhip is actually quite fun.

This one, hmmm...sustain pedal? Nope...unless there's something I'm missing. That means: right off the bet, this one is spooky. :o
(Loophole is to use midi CC mapping of Release time to Sustain pedal with proper min and max values!)

I see virtually no midi modulation option besides some hardcoded pitchbend. I mean, could be a cool synth for some instruments, but to make a whole track arrangement with it will get challenging for sure!
