I'm looking to make electroswing. I don't have kontakt but I might save up for it. Is that worth doing so?

you dont need to spend $200 or even a vst for that, just go sample riffs from old swing videos on you tube.
HW SYNTHS [KORG T2EX - AKAI AX80 - YAMAHA SY77 - ENSONIQ VFX]
HW MODULES [OBi M1000 - ROLAND MKS-50 - ROLAND JV880 - KURZ 1000PX]
SW [CHARLATAN - OBXD - OXE - ELEKTRO - MICROTERA - M1 - SURGE - RMiV]
DAW [ENERGY XT2/1U RACK WINXP / MAUDIO 1010LT PCI]

^this, it sounds mostly sampled from the songs I heard, alternatively you could buy a pack of pre-made phrases to chop, buying a full fledged brass vst or kontakt + a brass library seems like a waste of resources unless you really wanna make your own riffs to sample and choplayzer wrote:you dont need to spend $200 or even a vst for that, just go sample riffs from old swing videos on you tube.

I like to write my own riffs and stuff. I've got a few samples off splice but it's hard for me to work with pre-made loops and stuff when I don't know the notes

IMHO Best "not sampled" Brass is Arturia Brass. However I can't say its cheap or not because its kinda abbandoned, at Arturia.com its unavailable.

check out some of the free maize vsts from bigcat and see how far they get you http://bigcatinstruments.blogspot.com/ or possibly a cheap rompler, any $200 brass library will probably require kontakt which will double the cost
I don't have much experience with loop packs but I imagine most sample packs probably have information about the key, tempo and what not, also trying to emulate sample based music without samples will also require a good fx chain to make it sound right, just playing a brass riff and adding it to an existing track won't give you the sound you're after no matter what plugin you use

Native instruments Session Horns for 99 EUR will do the job... It doesn't require full Kontakt, there is a free version called Kontakt player that loads some NI instruments and third party libraries.
Check also Garritan Jazz & Big Band instrument - 150 USD.
I think that these two are the cheapest offers on the market.

Samplemodeling's The Trumpet and/or The Trombone. €159 each and works with the free Kontakt Player
Despite being kinda goofy this shows off quite a lot of the articulations you can achieve:

Dunno about 'best' ... but depending on what you're after you can get away pretty cheap with some of the aforementioned freebies + Sonatina, DSK Saxophone, ... or even add some rompler presets. If you really want to burn some cash here's another package that hasn' t been mentioned so far:
