The filters are ZDF, too, which helps with the nonlinear analog modeling. I originally bought Dune 2 after playing with Synapse’s “Antidote” Rack Extension and really liking the sound.

That would definitely be a problem for Jupiter 8 but DUNE has 30 or more different filters to choose from as a start. From there you can play with them even further with DUNE's flexible routing between filters and per filter drive to give it any character you might want. It can sound as warm or as cold as you want it to.

Sterile and cold ? You've never actually tried Dune 3 have you ? Or you've only flipped through a handful of factory presets.

Dune 3 Patch "Sea of Life"

I last demoed it like a year ago. Sorry, but your audio proves what I mean, it sounds sterile and unpleasant to me.

Which of the 30 different filters do you mean ? The 5 Analog Modeled Filters ?

Be honest when was the last time you actually tried Dune 3 ?
I know it has lots of filters, but since when does the number matter?
I am not even focusing on analog sound (I don't really care about that whole analog mania), but simply on what I consider pleasant and good sound. That's how the Tal J8 filter sounds to me (especially when increasing the VCO calibration knob to like 10 o'clock).

And I've spent hundreds of hours with Dune since the first version all the way to version 3. Your opinion of Dune is nonsense to me....that's my opinion based on real experience.

Calling Dune 3 sterile is ridiculous. You couldn't even pick its raw Saw wave out of a choice of four.

I don't expect you to admit that you're wrong. That patch is one Osc in one Layer. Let's hear Tal J-8 do that with one Osc. Come on upload a patch. Put your money where your mouth is.

It's not just the number but the quality as well.

Do you really think the creator of The Legend and OBsession would put crap filters into Dune 3 ?

Let me ask you something. What do you get from slagging off a synth, any synth over and over ? There are synths I'm not fond of but I don't constantly talk smack about them. You don't see me in every thread about Sylenth 1 calling it old and tired and outdated do you ? I just don't get it.

If you don't like Dune 3 that's fine but don't spread nonsense.

But if that is his view, why is necessarily Nonsense?
I have a different opinion of Dune that he does, but it for the most part subjective.
Yours are not necessarily more correct than his.
Or do you somehow think it is?

Yes I know my opinion is more correct than his. Otherwise I wouldn't have that opinion would I ?

Is my opinion more valid than his ? Well the opinion of someone who has been using Dune 3 every day for years since it was released could certainly be considered more valid than the opinion of someone who spent few minutes with the demo a year ago.

Of course he has a right to his opinion. He has every right to be wrong.

Oh I have tons of opinions, I don't automatically assume it is more correct than others.
That is just arrogant.

What's the point of comparing a flexible workhorse synth against a specialist (analog emu)?

Apples to oranges.

Even though on Dune3 some of the filters with clever patch programming sound really big and can get dirty, an analog emu will make those type of sounds with less programming effort.

But then the analog emulation can't go to some places the flexible synth can.

As said. Apples to oranges.

So what, I have spent hundreds of hours with Sylenth1, but I am very aware of its shortcomings. It sounds not nearly as good as Tal J8 for instance.

Indeed, a saw sounds almost the same on most synths. So, what makes the difference obviously is whatever comes after the oscillators.

I did not like that patch, it didn't sound good or pleasant to my ears.
It is my subjective opinion, and as such just as valid as yours.

Dune 3 vs OBsession? Why would there not be considerable differences? Does Zebra sound the same as Repro?

Do you really expect everyone to either like Dune 3 or else not post in this thread? Why can't you handle a little criticism?

You can demo the Tal yourself, no need for me to upload anything. Either you hear the difference, or you don't.

All I’ll say is that Dune 3 is a fabulous workhorse synth that is surprisingly good at almost any type of sound you want to create.
Even it’s FM whilst being rudimentary sounds really good.
I currently use Serum, Dune 3, Diva, Repro5 and DX7 V and bx_oberhausen.
If I had to choose one over all of them it would be Dune 3 just for it’s flexibility and versatility.
(Although i would hate to lose Repro5 because it’s probably the closest I will get to owning a Prophet 5 😄)
