How to make that sound...

Hi All!

Does anybody know where the patch / preset at the start of this song is from?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFtYHbjF5hc

Synths used in this day (88-92) were:- Roland SH-101, Roland Juno 106, Roland Jupiter 8, Roland D50, Casio CZ-101, Korg M1, Korg Wavestation, Korg Polysix, Korg Mono/Poly, Korg DS8, Yamaha DX7, Yamaha DX100 and the EMU Emulator II. Could be off one of them perhaps?

Or is it a sample?

Thanks!

I'm sure it was this one, can't be 100% sure but it was one of the Kawai's I read it years ago in SOS Mag

Thanks will have to check that out. Not heard of that synth before. I named 13 synths and it wasn't one of them lol! Another possible once used could have been the Korg MS-20.

Also Roland W30 and Roland U220 (The Prodigy).

What kind of preset d'ya think it is, just a poly preset?

Post

MS-20 & SH-101 did not have presets at all.
Also very unclear which sound you mean: the string pads, pan flute, what sound??
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Image

There's only 1 sound at the beginning of the song.

The stringy pad kinda sound that's accompanied by the open hat and bongo / congas.

I only hear one.

Two notes, one sound.

A "simple" but very effective tool to quickly get many very useful stringy/brassy/pad sounds (including ye olde string machine type):

2getheraudio - Cheeze Machine 2
A recently released remastered version of the original and extremely popular Cheeze Machine virtual instrument by the original author (Big Tick Audio)
https://www.2getheraudio.com/instrument ... machine-2/

It can do (many) other types of sounds too (like pads, b(r)asses and plucks). Definitively worth checking out.

Great, will check that Cheeze Machine plug-in out.

I've subsequently found out though that that intro synth was done on the Roland Super JX10. I haven't found the exact preset yet from watching a few vids on You Tube but one called Wave 2 sounded pretty similar.

Heard in this video at 11m16s:-

I don't know why you think that it was done on a Roland JX10. Or why you think this (more or less) raw saw JX10 patch sounds similar to your original track/example....but....

If so, you can try the excellent and FREE Roland JX8P emulation:

ML-VST (Martin Luder) - PG8X
https://www.kvraudio.com/product/pg-8x-by-ml-vst

The Roland JX10 is more or less 2 JX8 in one box....

BTW...

The JX10 patch your referring to is factory patch E8 DCO WAVE 2. It says so on the display...and in the Roland JX10 Owner's Manual...

But....it sounds quite different according to this Synthmania example
http://www.synthmania.com/mks-70_super_jx.htm

http://www.synthmania.com/Roland%20MKS- ... ve%202.mp3

The MKS70 is the rack version of the JX10.

Why would you know, I never elaborated?

It said so on Discoggs:-

https://www.discogs.com/New-Atlantic-I- ... ease/94391

I have the PG8X as well, sounds pretty good.

Dunno why you were so offended either? I said Wave 2, I just missed the E8 DCO bit off.

Offended? Not offended at all.....just wondering. Also not pretending the be the source of all things true and complete. Just trying to help. It's not my question(s) I'm trying answer.

Anyway...back to the question and the examples...

It was not at all about the "missing datails" (E8 DCO). I just wondered.

Also wonderd if it was a factory patch, which it was. And took the time to check and tell you that.

It's just that I don't hear the similarity between both Youtube examples. There no implying right or wrong there...just my perception/opinion.

I just added another reaction (just before yours). I was wondering if there was an example of JX10 presets/patches/waveforms online and found it on Synthmania (see above). And that's not what you hear in the Youtube examples at all.

And....indeed the JX10 is mentioned as the souce of the intro in the above mentioned discogs entry. So you found part of the answer to your question. And that was your/our goal.

Check out some of the audio examples om Synthmania. I guess factory patch D7 REVERB STRINGS comes pretty close.
